Human Resources Generalist

Semmes, Bowen & Semmes has an immediate opening in our Baltimore office for a Human Resources Generalist. This position will assist with the support of employee relations, benefit programs, talent acquisition, new hire onboarding, and payroll. Our ideal candidate will oversee the annual open enrollment process; act as the main point of contact for all employee benefit programs and works directly with our business partners regarding enrollments and employee inquiries. Assist with payroll processing, invoice reconciliation, and reporting. We are looking for a candidate that has three to five years of progressive HR experience as a generalist or multifunctional HR role with SHRM or PHR certification strongly preferred.

This position will require the candidate to commute to our Baltimore office 3-4 days per week.

Compensation: $65,000 to $85,000 annually

Qualifications:

• Bachelor’s degree in human resources management, Business Administration, or a similar field.
• Five years of relevant work experience, with progressive HR experience in a generalist or multifunctional HR role.
• Experience with payroll software such as Paycom, Paychex, or ADP is required.
• Experience with HRIS platforms and proficient with Microsoft Windows based software including Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook required.
• Advanced computer skills including data entry, data processing, communication tools, payroll and human resources software.
• The ability to calculate numbers, develop spreadsheets collect data, and reconcile reports.  
• SHRM or PHR certification is a plus.
• CEBS or other benefits plan certifications is a plus.
• Previous experience at a law firm, administering benefits, pension plans, and self-insured medical plans is a plus.
• Strong knowledge of federal and state employment laws and regulations and HR best practices, including ACA, COBRA, 457 plans, FMLA, ERISA, Secure 2.0, etc. Those related to benefits and retirement plans and the ability to apply that knowledge effectively to ensure compliance is a plus.
• Strong understanding and experience of benefit and retirement regulations. Including a strong understanding of premium rates, stop loss programs, etc.
• Strong communication skills, verbal and written.
• Strong people skills and the ability to work effectively at all levels across the organization, demonstrating diplomacy, tact, responsiveness, and professionalism.
• Excellent organizational and time management skills, a high attention to detail, and strong analytical and problem-solving skills.

• Capable of completing high-quality work expeditiously under minimal supervision.
• Ability to manage sensitive information, maintain confidentiality, and ensure such information is secured and maintained in an appropriate manner.
• Candidates must be legally eligible to work in the U.S.

Responsibilities:

• Partner with the Director of HR in the area of talent acquisition including updating job postings, recruitment tracker, screening candidates, and maintaining the Firm's ATS.
• Assist with new hire onboarding and orientation, including conducting in person orientation meetings, building the orientation schedule and coordinating training. Assist in the development and facilitation of training and materials related to HR initiatives.
• Act as the primary backup person to the Payroll Specialist, including payroll processing, timecard maintenance, reporting, and new hire setup.
• Partner with the Director of HR to advise managers and employees on HR policies and initiatives to support organizational goals. Including collaboration with the administration team and Firm management on work-related process improvements, compensation, compliance, technology, and employee experience. 
• Function as primary point person and subject matter expert for all medical, dental, vision, HSA, FSA, group life insurances, FMLA, STD and LTD, pension, and 401k employee questions and consult with benefit vendors as needed, with support of the Chief Operating Officer and Director of HR.
• Support the processing and administration of all leave requests, including FMLA, paid family leave, etc. Ensure that relevant forms, information, and supporting documentation are provided to and collected from employees to ensure timely and accurate approval and tracking/documentation processes.
• Serve as point of contact for providing accurate and timely responses to employees related to benefits and retirement questions and needs, including those related to obtaining clarification about plan provisions, enrollment, eligibility, and assistance with carriers.
• Support annual open enrollment, working directly with vendors, ensuring accurate transfer of information related to withholding and insurance costs, employee enrollment, beneficiary changes, etc.
• Ensure accurate and timely processing and monthly reconciliation of carriers’ invoices and submission of payment requests.
• Write business correspondence and policy and procedure manuals.
• Primary point of contact to report and process any Workers’ Compensation or Unemployment claims. Including tracking workplace incidents, answering requests from DLLR, etc.
• Participating as a Human Resources team member, attending staff meetings, and supporting the implementation and administration of various department initiatives, managing, performing, or assisting with various projects, processes, and programs.
• Ensure compliance with all applicable federal, state, and local employment laws and maintain the confidentiality of all Human Resources-related information and other confidential matters related to firm operations.
• Maintain a focus on professional development and keep abreast of Human Resources trends and issues, particularly those related to developments in retirement and employee benefits.
• Perform other duties as required.
