Job description

VP of Engineering (m/f/d) | Fulltime | Stuttgart or Berlin | Remote

Who We Are

vialytics is revolutionizing how cities manage road infrastructure. Our AI-powered road management system, combining intelligent software with a simple smartphone, enables municipalities to detect road damage, prioritize maintenance, and make smarter infrastructure decisions.

Founded in 2018, we have rapidly scaled across Europe and the U.S., supporting 900+ municipalities in 7 countries. Backed by a $10M Series A, vialytics is a fast-growing scale-up with ambitious international growth plans.

As VP of Engineering you are based in Berlin or Stuttgart and you will be the most senior engineering leader at vialytics. You will lead Engineering, Platform, and Data Science, and partner closely with the CPTO to shape the technology strategy that supports our product ambition and growth.

We’re building the #1 Public Works Operating System, with AI at the core of where the product is going. Because we serve the public sector, this role is not just about moving fast, it is about building technology that is scalable, reliable, and trusted in complex real-world environments.

Your Mission at vialytics

This role is about helping us get there: building a high-performing engineering organization, setting clear technical direction, and creating the platform and systems we need to scale well. You will also be responsible for the Data Science function, ensuring that our data and AI capabilities are tightly connected to the way we build products and scale the business.

You will work closely with leaders across Product, Design, and Data to turn ambitious ideas into reliable, customer-facing products. We’re looking for someone who is technically strong, product-minded, and great at building teams. A leader who knows how to combine strategy with execution and bring AI into products in ways that are practical, thoughtful, and impactful.

πŸ’Ό Your Key Responsibilities

Engineering leadership and organizational scale

  • Lead Engineering, Platform, and Data Science; hire, coach, and raise the bar for engineering leaders, especially product-minded engineering managers who build strong teams, attract top talent, and hold a high performance bar

  • Build leadership structures, team design, and career paths to scale while maintaining a high bar for quality, accountability, and team health

Delivery and cross-functional execution

  • Own engineering execution and delivery with consistency, urgency, and high standards, helping teams work effectively in product trios from discovery through delivery

  • Establish clear operating rhythms, planning, and decision-making processes that help the organization move fast without losing focus

Platform, engineering craft, and modern ways of working

  • Raise the bar on engineering craft (architecture, CI/CD, quality, observability, developer experience) and own the invisible foundations: data integrity, security posture, monitoring, vendor relationships

  • Build a scalable platform and lead the adoption of AI-native engineering practices and tooling, using them pragmatically to improve productivity, quality, and speed

Data Science, AI, and technical direction

  • Partner with Data Science to connect AI and research to product and engineering execution; scale computer vision and next-gen AI (incl. LLMs)

  • Align on technical direction with the CPTO and product leadership, make strong, business-minded technology decisions, and bring emerging technology trends to the table proactively

🌟 We would be the perfect match if you

  • You have led and scaled engineering teams from 30 to 70+ engineers in a B2B SaaS, ideally product-led, environment, building structures that sustain growth. You bring at least 5 years of experience in such roles, either as a CTO or reporting to a CTO/CPTO, owning engineering while staying closely aligned with product and technology leadership.

  • You are a product-minded engineering leader with strong business judgment and deep technical credibility. You have grown from a hands-on engineering background into leadership, can go deep when needed, and know how to set a high bar for engineering craft while connecting technical decisions to customer, product, and business impact.

  • You've partnered closely with Data Science/ML teams, integrating ML into product development, bridging Data Science and engineering, and ensuring initiatives deliver real product value.

  • You believe deeply in cross-functional teams and a DevOps mindset, with engineering owning the full cycle and using metrics like DORA to drive performance.

  • You're driven by real agility, shipping value continuously and adapting quickly, rather than by ceremony or process for its own sake.

  • You are a leader of leaders who develops managers, coaches on people leadership, and builds scalable processes across planning, delivery, and operations, while communicating with evidence, not jargon, through structured reporting that stakeholders across the business can clearly understand and act on.

  • You're excited about AI transforming engineering and have led (or are ready to lead) teams through the shift. You want to be at the front of it, not catching up, with a clear point of view on where it adds value and how to drive adoption

  • You bring a product minded, cross functional, and outcome driven approach to engineering leadership. You value pragmatic ways of working, close collaboration across Product, Design, and Engineering, and a strong connection between technical decisions, customer value, and business impact. Exposure to US tech environments or US led organizations can be a plus, but what matters most is the mindset.

  • You are located either in Berlin or around Stuttgart to be able to come to onsite to Stuttgart on regular basis.
