  • Collaborate with Operations Engineering, vendor teams, and other stakeholders to review QA/QC activities, commissioning changes, and to support troubleshooting of controls-related operational issues.

The Controls Group Support Engineer provides technical support for the deployment, testing, and operation of data center control and monitoring systems. Working under the direction of senior controls engineers and the Manager Controls, this role supports construction, commissioning, and operational phases by assisting with system validation, troubleshooting, documentation, and vendor coordination. The position focuses on ensuring controls systems perform as designed and meet quality expectations through Power and Facilities Hand-Off (PFHO) and turnover processes from Operations Engineering into steady-state operations.

Key Responsibilities
  • Support the deployment of data center control and monitoring systems during construction and commissioning (L1-L5) activities under the guidance of senior controls personnel.
  • Assist with validation and documentation of controls and monitoring systems, performance, ensuring deliverables are complete, accurate, and suitable for handover to Operations.
  • Provide technical support related to building operations, mechanical and electrical plant controls, BMS/EPMS systems, and associated field devices.
  • Execute point-to-point verification, software logic checks, and graphics testing to confirm operability, compatibility, and alignment with design intent.
  • In coordination with Operations Engineering, review QA/QC activities, hardware installations, control panels, wiring, and programming changes identified during commissioning.
  • Participate in commissioning testing to validate controls settings, alarm thresholds, system integrations, and basic operability of infrastructure systems.
  • Support troubleshooting and resolution of controls-related operational issues, including Loss of Visibility (LOV), Loss of Resilience (LOR), and other events impacting operations, in accordance with defined Service Level Agreements (SLAs).
  • Collaborate with Operations, Development, Operations Engineering, and vendor teams to identify defects, document findings, and support corrective actions.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement efforts by identifying recurring issues, documenting lessons learned, and suggesting enhancements to controls systems or procedures.
  • In coordination with Operations Engineering, maintain accurate and timely documentation, including test results, commissioning records, as-built updates, and operational reference materials.

  • Required Skills
  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a closely related discipline; equivalent industry or military experience may be considered in lieu of a degree.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience supporting controls engineering activities, including system installation, testing, start-up, commissioning, or operations in industrial or critical environments.
  • Exposure to control system integration involving multiple vendors, subsystems, and field devices.
  • Working knowledge of control theory fundamentals, including proportional-integral-derivative (PID) concepts.
  • Familiarity with PLC or SCADA-based control systems and standard industrial programming environments.
  • Ability to read and interpret engineering documentation, including electrical one-line diagrams, control diagrams, network schematics, and control panel drawings.
  • Experience supporting data centers or other mission-critical facilities such as hospitals, laboratories, defense facilities, pharmaceutical manufacturing, or oil and gas operations
  • Hands-on experience with electrical or mechanical controls systems installation, service, or field support.
  • Familiarity with commissioning processes, test procedures, and basic safety and regulatory requirements.
  • Experience working with BMS, EPMS, or industrial automation platforms in an operational support capacity.
  • Ability to produce clear, consistent technical documentation, test reports, and operational reference materials.
  • General knowledge of critical data center equipment, including generators, UPS systems, switchgear, transformers, chillers, air handling units (AHU, CRAH, CRAC), fire detection and suppression systems, and associated controls.
