Job description

Summary
The Eclipse Foundation is one of the world’s largest open source software foundations, with a proven track record of enabling developer-focused open source innovation earned over 19 years. The Foundation is the home of numerous industry-leading projects and collaborations including Adoptium, Software Defined Vehicle, Eclipse IDE, IoT, and Jakarta EE. Supported by over 350 members globally, the Foundation has an established international reach and reputation.

The Role
The Eclipse Foundation is hiring a Research Project Manager to lead its participation in European research projects across domains such as IoT, Cloud Computing, AI, and Dataspaces. Reporting to the Director of Research and Strategic Initiatives, you will bridge the gap between cutting-edge research and real-world industry impact.

Your mission is twofold:
  • Strategic Community Building: Facilitate the dissemination and exploitation of research results, ensuring project outcomes are transitioned into sustainable open source ecosystems.
  • Technical Enablement: Guide research partners through the Eclipse Development Process (EDP) and open source best practices ensuring technical robustness and community alignment.
  • Regular travel will be required to represent the Foundation at international meetings, reviews, and public events.

Responsibilities

As a Research Project Manager, you will manage the full lifecycle of project participation:
  • Impact & Innovation Management: Lead the creation of exploitation strategies, market analysis, and business plans to ensure research results achieve long-term sustainability.
  • Community Building & Dissemination: Initiate and organize workshops, hackathons, and conferences. Leverage Eclipse Foundation assets to grow vibrant open source communities around research projects.
  • Technical Advisory: Support project developers in adopting the Eclipse Development Process (EDP), license compliance, and modern DevOps practices (GitLab/GitHub, CI/CD, Jenkins).
  • Proposal Development: Contribute to EU project proposals, specifically focusing on work packages related to impact creation, innovation management, and community outreach.
  • Strategic Representation: Promote the Foundation’s vision in strategic research agendas and encourage synergies between EU projects and the broader Eclipse membership.
  • Project Administration: Ensure high-quality execution of tasks, including regular reporting of workload, expenses, and deliverables as required by EU processes.


Qualifications

Required
  • Experience: Minimum of 5 years in EU Research programs (Horizon Europe, Horizon 2020, etc.).
  • Strategic Writing: Proven track record in writing EU project proposals, specifically regarding impact, innovation management, and exploitation.
  • Technical Domain Knowledge: Solid understanding of challenges in Dataspaces, IoT, AI, and/or Cloud Computing.
  • Project Management: Experience organizing contributions from diverse, distributed teams and multi-stakeholder consortiums.
  • Software Literacy: Familiarity with software development lifecycles, including CI/CD tools and collaborative platforms (GitLab/GitHub).
  • Communication: Fluent in English (written and spoken) with the ability to present complex topics to both technical and business audiences.

Preferred
  • Open Source Ecosystem Knowledge: Familiarity with the Eclipse Foundation ecosystem, open source governance models and community building practices.
  • Business Acumen: Experience in developing market analysis and commercial sustainability models for research outputs.
  • Marketing & Web Tools: Knowledge of web-based communications, including Social Media management (LinkedIn, X) and email marketing (HubSpot).
  • Languages: Fluency in some European languages is a significant asset.
  • Remote Work: Proven ability to work effectively in a 100% remote, distributed environment.

Education
University (Master’s or higher) in a technical or engineering-related field (industrial, computer science, telecommunications,…)

Location of Position
  • Location: 100% Remote. Preference for candidates based in France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Portugal, or Belgium.
  • Travel: Close access to an international airport is preferred due to regular European travel requirements.
