Job Summary: A Scientist II provides advanced expertise and leadership. This is an advanced level position for science degreed laboratory personnel with at least 5 years of coatings experience. This position requires the ability to carry out experiments and complete tasks with a high degree of uncertainty with an advanced level of judgement and independent thinking.
Essential Responsibilities:
Independent planning and ownership of project work with complete accountability for projects of advanced complexity
Advanced understanding of formulation techniques and raw materials in multiple technology areas
Experimental design of and application of Design for Lean Six Sigma formulation strategies
Identify and implement formulation, process, and testing upgrades to improve productivity
Serve as a team leader/Project Manager in Customization or New Solution/Technology Projects
Provide advanced technical support to internal and external customers including problem resolution that is complex in nature.
Customer support activities including on site presentations and technical support
Review of internal and external reports
May supervise technicians day to day activities
Minimum Qualifications:
Demonstrates a high level of quality and leadership with a demonstrated track record of significant, successful project commercialisations or technological advancements
Effective and proactive communication with Work Contacts such as peers, manager, senior management and other internal departments as well as customers
Ability to work to a timeline, effectively communicate obstacles and self-prioritize work activities in a low structure environment
Advanced level of formulation knowledge in multiple technologies as demonstrated by the ability to make complex formulation adjustments, including raw material choice, to modify properties as required with little to no supervision
Advanced level knowledge of testing procedures as demonstrated by the ability to operate advanced equipment or perform complex testing with no supervision
Ability to perform intermediate mathematical calculations such as stoichiometry
Ability to operate experimental design software
Ability to complete reporting requirements such as maintaining a laboratory notebook and/or generating customer ready reports using Microsoft Office to accurately document activities
Ability to work well in a team atmosphere and possessing the interpersonal skills required to effectively communicate with customers and other departments within Hempel
Successful completion of specialized testing for color vision may be required
BA, BS or MS in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Polymer Chemistry or related field
5+ years’ experience in Coatings or a closely related field
