Job description

Director of Strategic Partnerships, WooCommerce

Automattic—the global leader in publishing, messaging, and commerce software—is building the operating system for the open web. Our goal is to democratize publishing, messaging, and commerce so that anyone with a story can tell it, and anyone with a product can sell it, regardless of income, gender, politics, language, or where they live in the world. With a strong commitment to open source, we have deep roots in WordPress, the platform that powers our business and 43% of the web.

In a fast-paced, complex market, we own a diverse set of assets, deploy numerous business models, and offer scalability from B2C to SMB and Enterprise customers. Our brands include ecommerce and fintech (WooCommerce), Enterprise SaaS (WordPress VIP), and infrastructure hosting, spanning customer segments that include SMB, online merchants, enterprise, government, and even consumer. In our incubator, we also support a broad set of new business start-ups that currently incorporate messaging, ads, and social media.

The co-founder of WordPress and CEO of Automattic, Matt Mullenweg, is driving a growth and expansion strategy that is still in its early days, with a massive addressable market and exceptional upside. Today, we manage the internet properties for renowned organizations such as Salesforce, Porsche, Meta, Disney, and NASA. Over four million online stores run on WooCommerce, which accounts for 34% of all online stores globally, and more than 1 billion people use our products each month. Automattic has established itself as a pivotal player in the digital landscape.

We’re a remote-based company with 1500 Automatticians in nearly every corner of the globe, speaking over a hundred different languages. Unlike many companies, we are and will always be 100% remote (we call it distributed). This means that you can work from anywhere in the world, in any time zone, leveraging collaboration tools and asynchronous communication.

Automattic’s story would not be complete without mentioning our focus on mergers and acquisitions. Over the past 17 years, we’ve acquired 35 companies, including WooCommerce, Parse.ly, and most recently, Texts.com and Beeper.com, our multi-channel messaging plays. These acquisitions now represent some of Automattic’s largest business units and growth drivers.

Our company is backed by some of the world’s most respected investors, spanning mutual funds, venture capital, sovereign wealth, and strategics. These include Salesforce Ventures, Insight Venture Partners, ICONIQ Capital, True Ventures, Wellington Management, Alta Park Capital, Schonfeld, New York Times Company, and Tiger Global Management.

Our Board includes Sue Decker, who also serves on the boards of Berkshire Hathaway, Costco, and Vox Media, and Ann Dunwoody, the first female four-star general in the US Army, who also serves as a Trustee for Fidelity Investments. Automattic is profitable, generates positive cash flow, and aggressively invests in future growth. It’s a great place to build a career, learn, and contribute!

The Opportunity

Built on WordPress, WooCommerce is the leading open-source commerce platform, powering over four million online stores and accounting for 34% of all online stores globally. WooCommerce enables anyone to easily create a physical or digital store, and sell anything from products, to subscriptions, to services, or virtually anything else, and reach customers around the world. As an open platform, WooCommerce is the most flexible, customizable ecommerce platform available, and we foster an ecosystem of developers and creators who build custom solutions, pushing the boundaries of what’s possible. We believe in democratizing commerce—and we are hard at work making WooCommerce available to as many people and businesses as possible.

Strategic partnerships are a key growth engine for WooCommerce and one of the most impactful areas within Automattic. Our strategic partnerships are fundamental to enabling merchant success across every stage of their journey. We collaborate with best-in-class global technology partners across key categories to extend the power and flexibility of our platform. These include marketing and customer engagement tools like Klaviyo, Mailchimp, and Trustpilot; logistics and fulfillment providers like UPS, FedEx, and ShipStation; and advertising platforms like Google, Meta, TikTok, and Pinterest that help merchants acquire and grow their customer base. To simplify financial operations, we also integrate with leading payment solutions like Stripe, PayPal, and Square, as well as tax and accounting platforms such as QuickBooks, Xero, TaxJar, and Avalara. These partnerships are core to our open source approach, giving merchants the power to customize their stores with trusted, scalable solutions built for growth.

WooCommerce is seeking a highly driven and strategic individual to join our Strategic Partnerships team. In this role, you’ll play a key part in identifying and developing high-impact partnerships that align with WooCommerce’s long-term vision. Your work will help drive revenue, broaden our ecosystem, and create meaningful value for our merchants and partners.

Responsibilities

  • Identify and assess strategic partnerships that increase the adoption of Woo, generate revenue, and strengthen our product offering.

  • Negotiate comprehensive agreements across multiple categories with potential partners and renewals/expansions for existing partners.

  • Establish, nurture, and mature relationships with existing and new key partners (Fortune 100 companies) to drive mutual growth and success.

  • Monitor and optimize program performance, using analytics to identify trends, opportunities, and risks within the partner ecosystem.

  • Design processes that enable the team to scale, from standardizing common deals to implementing reporting on metrics that track the progress against our goals.

Requirements

  • 8+ years of experience in strategic partnerships, business development, or related roles within the ecommerce, SaaS, or fintech sectors.

  • Experience in consumer, SMB, and mid-market business models, preferably with knowledge of advertising, social media, ecommerce, analytics, and Martech stacks.

  • Experience working cross-functionally with legal, engineering, and marketing teams.

  • Proven track record of building and scaling partnerships that drive revenue and customer value.

  • Strong negotiation skills and experience managing complex partnership agreements.

  • Comfortable with ambiguity, open to feedback, and willing to challenge conventions while taking thoughtful risks. "Embraces collaboration, challenges the status quo, takes calculated risks, and adapts well to ambiguity, with a strong receptiveness to feedback.

  • Experience with mergers, acquisitions, and investments is beneficial.
