M365 Engineer (Microsoft 365 Engineer)

Location: Remote (US-based, Central hours preferred)
Type: Contract / Long-Term Opportunity

Overview

We are seeking a highly technical M365 Engineer to join a large, complex enterprise environment supporting ~14,000 users. This role will partner closely with a lean team (currently one primary engineer) to reduce backlog, stabilize the environment, and drive automation and architectural improvements.

This is a hands-on role requiring strong ownership, independence, and the ability to operate effectively in a fast-moving, regulated environment.

Key Responsibilities

Perform tenant cleanup, backlog reduction, and operational support across Microsoft 365
Design and implement PowerShell-based automation to improve efficiency and scalability
Leverage Microsoft Graph for automation, reporting, and system integration
Troubleshoot and resolve complex M365 issues across core services (Exchange, Teams, SharePoint, Entra ID)
Support identity, access, and configuration management in a large enterprise environment
Contribute to architecture, governance, and long-term optimization initiatives
Collaborate across teams while maintaining high responsiveness and accountability in a remote setting

Required Qualifications

5 years of hands-on experience with Microsoft 365 in large enterprise environments (10K users)
Advanced PowerShell scripting (must be able to build, troubleshoot, and validate independently)
Experience with Microsoft Graph API
Strong troubleshooting skills across M365 services and identity systems
Experience working in regulated environments (HIPAA, GDPR, SOC2, etc.)
Proven ability to work independently with minimal oversight

Preferred

Experience in healthcare or similarly regulated industries
Background supporting complex, legacy-integrated environments
Exposure to automation frameworks and M365 governance models

Environment & Expectations

Enterprise-scale, highly complex M365 environment with diverse stakeholders
Initial focus on cleanup and operational stabilization, evolving into automation and architecture
Fully remote, with core hours aligned to 8am–5pm Central and some flexibility
Strong emphasis on responsiveness, communication, and teamwork
