Job description

VOLUNTEER CLINICAL SUPERVISOR

We thank you for considering becoming a volunteer with Maple Counseling! Volunteer Clinical Supervisors play an essential role in the professional development of our trainees. We ask that all volunteer clinical supervisors adhere to the following criteria in their affiliation with Maple Counseling:

1.    Licensed for two years as an LMFT, LCSW, LPCC, Licensed Clinical Psychologist, or Board-Certified Psychiatrist.

2.    Maintain an active clinical license in California, in good standing with respective licensing board.

3.    Have practiced psychotherapy for at least two of the past five years, OR, have directly supervised trainees or associates for two of the past five years.

4.    Meet continuing education requirements in clinical supervision:  a one-time 15-hour course for first time supervisors, and 6 hours per license renewal cycle thereafter.  Licensed psychologists and board-certified psychiatrists exempt.

5.    Provide Maple Counseling with a curriculum vita, copy of current license and current professional liability insurance.

6.    Make a minimum one-year commitment to supervise one or two trainees for one hour per week via telehealth (two trainees meeting together with a supervisor for one hour is β€œtriadic” supervision). Although most supervision in done virtually, in-person supervision may be available upon request.

7.    Complete a BBS Supervision Agreement form within 60 days of the commencement of supervision, and return it to the intern to send to their appropriate board.

8.    Sign the trainee's hours of experience weekly log for the one hour of supervision provided.

9.    Be familiar with the policies and procedures of Maple Counseling.

10.    Communicate with the staff group supervisor (these contacts to be initiated by the group supervisor).

b.    Meet with the trainee to discuss the evaluation.

12. The Maple Counseling staff group supervisor is the primary supervisor and legally responsible for all cases. Any changes in a treatment plan must be presented to the primary supervisor prior to implementation.  In order to work as a team, it is important to have contact between the volunteer supervisor and the staff group supervisor.  Although not limited to the following, these examples of problematic situations warrant contact with the group supervisor:

a.    The trainee discusses a client who is imminently suicidal or homicidal, or presents risk of harm to self or others.  In this situation, the staff group supervisor should be notified immediately.
b.    Trainee is not attending supervision on a regular basis, or is habitually late for supervision.
c.    Trainee does not present sufficient information to allow for effective supervision.
d.    Ethical or legal questions arise regarding the trainee's behavior;
e.    The volunteer supervisor disagrees with a treatment plan prescribed for a client.
