Job description

Looking for Philippines-based candidates

Job Role: Bookkeeper

Compensation: $2,000 AUD / Monthly

Engagement type: Independent Contractor Agreement

Work Schedule: This role is expected to align with the AU business hours (approx. 9 AM - 5 PM, Monday to Friday) for collaboration, but as a contractor, you’ll have flexibility in how you manage your time.

Who We Are: At Hunt St, we help Australian companies hire top remote talent in the Philippines. For this role, you will be engaged directly by the client as an independent contractor. We are not an outsourcing agency. All of our roles are 100% remote so you'll be able to work from home.

Who The Client Is: Our client is a boutique, Sydney-based accounting and advisory firm that works closely with small to medium-sized businesses, particularly within service-based industries. The firm is known for its practical, hands-on approach and strong focus on building long-term relationships with clients rather than operating as a high-volume compliance shop.

The leadership team brings real-world business experience, which influences how the firm delivers its services — prioritising clarity, commercial thinking, and proactive advice. Their work goes beyond standard bookkeeping and compliance, with a strong emphasis on helping clients understand their numbers and make informed decisions that support sustainable growth.

Role Overview: We’re seeking a detail-oriented and motivated accounting professional to take ownership of transactional and core accounting work for our Australian clients. This role plays a key part in improving efficiency and consistency across client files, while supporting our onshore accountants by freeing them up to focus on higher-value work such as tax, financial reporting, and advisory.

This position is ideal for someone who is committed to long-term career growth and is willing to undertake further training and professional development (funded by the firm) to transition into an Accountant role over time.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Conduct client meetings and follow up on queries in a timely and professional manner.
  • Manage the flow of information between clients and the firm.
  • Prepare Business Activity Statements (BAS) and Instalment Activity Statements (IAS).
  • Liaise with the ATO on client matters as required.
  • Assist with business entity setup and registrations.
  • Prepare ATO applications including ABN, TFN, GST, and PAYG registrations.
  • Perform data entry and maintain accurate and up-to-date client records.
  • Code transactions and complete bank and credit card reconciliations.
  • Record time incurred on client work to ensure accurate billing.
  • Maintain current and accurate client files, recording detailed notes and dating all actions.
  • Prepare workflow reports and monitor job progress.
  • Ensure all work is compliant with firm procedures and relevant legislation.
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of bookkeeping and accounting standards, legislation, and rulings.
  • Participate in internal and external training programs to support professional development.
  • Perform other duties as required.

Required Skills and Qualifications:

  • Minimum 2–3 years of experience working with Australian public accounting/bookkeeping practices.
  • Experience in coding transactions, bank, and credit card reconciliations.
  • Strong knowledge of Xero, including Xero Blue and Xero Tax.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to accuracy.
  • Excellent communication and organisational skills.
  • Willingness to undertake further training and professional development to progress into an Accountant role.

Work Arrangement & Expectations:

This is a remote role that will be set up as an independent contractor engagement.

To ensure alignment and transparency, successful candidates will be expected to:

  • Disclose any existing ongoing roles or client work
  • Reflect this engagement on their LinkedIn profile (clearly marked as “Independent Contractor”)
