Senior Accountant (US GAAP, Avalara Expert)

Location: Fully Remote

About the Role

We are seeking a Senior Accountant who combines full‑cycle accounting mastery with Avalara experience. You will own the general ledger and monthly close, manage multi‑state sales & use tax via Avalara (AvaTax, Returns, and CertCapture), and produce accurate US GAAP financials. This role is ideal for an accountant who thrives in a dynamic environment, enjoys improving processes, and can translate tax and accounting details into clear business insights.

Key Responsibilities
End‑to‑End Accounting (US GAAP)
  • Own the monthly, quarterly, and annual close (preparereview journals, accruals, amortizations, reconciliations).
  • Maintain the general ledger; ensure completeness, accuracy, and proper cutoff.
  • Prepare US GAAP financial statements and management reports (P&L, Balance Sheet, Cash Flow).
  • Manage AR and revenue processes (billing, cash application, aging, DSO tracking) and AP (vendor setup, 3‑way match, payment runs, DPO tracking).
  • Oversee payroll accounting, benefits, and related accruals; reconcile bank and credit card accounts.
  • Maintain fixed assets and leases (capitalization policy, depreciation schedules; ASC 842 support).
  • Support revenue recognition (ASC 606) and inventoryproject accounting as applicable.
  • Coordinate annual auditreviewtax preparation and support ad hoc analyses (cash forecasting, variance analysis).
    • Avalara Ownership (AvaTax, Returns, CertCapture)
      • Administer Avalara AvaTax: productservice tax code mapping, nexus settings, and jurisdiction updates.
      • Monitor economic nexus and manage statecitycounty registrations; maintain a current taxability matrix.
      • Drive monthly salesuse tax close: reconcile Avalara liability reports to the GL, investigate variances, and book entries.
      • File timely and accurate returns through Avalara Returns; manage notices and resolve exceptions.
      • Own exemption certificate lifecycle using CertCapture (collection, validation, expiry workflows).
      • Partner with EngineeringRevOpsIT to maintain connectors (ERPe‑commerce billing tools) and test changes.
      • Build a defensible audit trail; prepare documentation and lead responses during sales tax audits.
        • Controls, Compliance & Process Improvement
          • Strengthen accounting policies, close checklists, and SOX‑style controls appropriate for company stage.
          • Automatemanual‑to‑system transitions (e.g., reduce manual JEs, improve reconciliation tooling).
          • Create concise dashboards on close health, tax exposures, and filing status for leadership.
            • Qualifications

              Required

              • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field.
              • 5–8+ years of progressive accounting experience with end‑to‑end ownership of the close.
              • Avalara experience: AvaTax + Returns; CertCapture strongly preferred.
              • Demonstrated multi‑state sales & use tax compliance and nexus management.
              • Strong command of US GAAP (ASC 606 revenue; accruals; fixed assets; leases familiarity).
              • Advanced ExcelGoogle Sheets (lookups, pivot tables, reconciliations); comfort with large data sets.
              • Experience integrating Avalara with at least one ERPe‑commercebilling system.
                • Preferred

                  • CPA (active or in progress) or international equivalent.
                  • Industry experience in e‑commerce, SaaS, or multi‑channel retail (marketplace facilitator rules).
                  • ERP expertise: NetSuite, Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central, Sage Intacct, or QuickBooks Online.
                  • Experience with BIreporting (Power BI, Looker, Tableau) and basic SQL a plus.
