This is a remote role based out of IL, MN, NC, or NH.
The Mechanical Sales Engineer effectively evaluates product specifications for moderately complex customer projects that could include CNC Machining, 3D Printing, or Sheet Metal projects, and provides technical expertise in support of selling and retaining Protolabs’ Network services. This position is responsible for thorough review and evaluation of customers’ technical drawings, 3D CAD data and RFQ’s as required. Provide general review for project Statements of Work and quality requirements, while collaborating with downstream partners for selective coordination with Network manufacturing partners to fulfill product requirements and manage risk. Additionally, the Mechanical Sales Engineer provides direct technical expertise to Sales and external customers and serves as a technical consultant during customer interactions as required.
What youll do:
Review and validate quote requests with complex or offplatform specifications to ensure highquality order intake and determine appropriate outcomes based on manufacturing capabilities within the Protolabs Network.
Manage risk by ensuring commitments to product fulfillment align with manufacturing capabilities, pricing, and product offerings of the Protolabs Network.
Deliver Design for Manufacturing feedback and provide innovative solutions for customer projects.
Serve as a presale and postsale technical resource on customer calls with Sales and Project Management teams.
Collaborate with customers and the Sales team to understand and document customer requirements and project scopes of work for custom manufacturing solutions.
Communicate customer requirements to internal stakeholders and global manufacturing suppliers.
Provide price estimates for lowervalue manufacturing jobs.
Work with internal organizations such as Engineering, Product, Marketing, Supply Chain, and Customer Success to develop and validate customer solutions in line with Protolabs’ capabilities.
Collaborate with internal teams to implement new Protolabs’ offerings and refine existing offerings.
Provide technical training and ongoing guidance to Sales team while collaborating on sales opportunities.
What it takes:
BS in Engineering and 3+ years of applicable work experience OR equivalent work experience
Experience in design, manufacturing, or quality in CNC machining
Experience in a customerfacing andor sales support role is preferred
Proficient at reading technical drawings and knowledge of common materials and processes used in different manufacturing technologies.
Proficient understanding of Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) to ensure accurate manufacturing specifications
Direct experience in CNC machining including manufacturability analysis, machining strategy, surface finishing, and limitations of the technology
Working knowledge of 3D Printing (FDM, SLS, MJF, SLA, Polyjet) and Sheet Metal fabrication.
Working knowledge of CADCAM for part design and production
