Senior Manager, Finance, Accounting & Operations 

Our Mission  

New Leaders develops transformational school leaders and advances policies and practices that ensure high academic achievement for all children—especially for students from under-resourced communities. 

 

Position Details    

The Senior Manager, Finance, Accounting & Operations will be based out of a home office located anywhere within the contiguous United States (Pacific, Mountain, Central, and Eastern time zones) or United States territories that fall within the Atlantic time zone.  

 

Position Overview 

The Senior Manager, Finance, Accounting, & Operations (“Senior Manager”) maintains the financial integrity of the organization. This position is responsible for performing a wide range of accounting functions including accounts payable, payroll processing, month-end close procedures, journal entries, and account reconciliations. The Senior Manager is detail-oriented, has strong analytical skills, is driven to serving others throughout the organization, and has a commitment to financial stewardship.  

 

The Senior Manager, Finance, Accounting, & Operations reports to the Senior Executive Director, Finance. 

 

Specific Responsibilities 

Financial Accounting 

  • Execute the full accounts payable and disbursements cycle, including timely invoice processing, payment approvals, and vendor relationships
  • Properly record all accounts payable related general ledger transactions
  • Record bi-monthly and weekly payroll transactions, including reviewing time records, coordinating with HR on benefits and deductions, and recording necessary journal entries
  • Execute month-end closing procedures for assigned accounting areas
  • Collaborate with the other team members on month-end closing procedures and prepare related financial reports and analysis
  • Create and post various journal entries, ensuring accuracy and compliance with GAAP and nonprofit accounting standards
  • Record all cash receipts and perform regular account reconciliations for bank accounts, credit cards, and other financial accounts

Reporting & Analysis 

  • Process 1099 forms accurately and on time
  • Support the annual audit process by preparing documentation and responding to auditor inquiries
  • Assist with budget development, monitoring, and analysis
  • Generate financial reports for grant compliance and reporting requirements

Systems & Process Improvement 

  • Identify opportunities to streamline accounting processes and improve financial controls and collaborate on making such improvements
  • Maintain and enhance accounting policies and procedural documentation around areas of responsibility
  • Provide training and guidance to other accounting staff, or New Leaders staff, on financial procedures and applicable systems, as necessary

Additional Responsibilities 

  • Stay current with nonprofit accounting standards and best practices
  • Communicate effectively with the Senior Executive Director, Finance and Chief Financial Officer on the status of the Senior Manager’s responsibilities
  • Work collaboratively with other New Leaders staff members to ensure timely and accurate work products

 

Perform other duties as assigned by the Senior Executive Director, Finance or Chief Financial Officer.  

 

Qualifications and Competencies 

  • Educational Background: Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field required
  • Professional Experience: 
  • Minimum of 5 years of overall professional experience required
  • Minimum of 3-5 years of general ledger and accounting experience
  • Team-Driven: Proven ability to collaborate effectively with individuals across a variety of backgrounds and experiences; must be results-driven while maintaining a collaborative and inclusive leadership style
  • Mission Alignment: Passionate belief in academic excellence for every student, aligned with New Leaders' mission
  • Proficiency with accounting software and Microsoft Excel required; BlackBaud FinancialEdge, and Concur Expense experience a plus
  • Working understanding of GAAP and nonprofit accounting principles
  • Experience with payroll and accounts payable
  • Excellent attention to detail and analytical skills
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Commitment to excellence and customer satisfaction
  • Prior experience in nonprofit accounting preferred
  • Working knowledge of fund accounting principles preferred
  • Working experience with financial reporting for grants and contracts preferred
  • Experience with vendor management and 1099 processing preferred
  • Familiarity with payroll tax regulations and compliance requirements preferred
  • Travel may be required on occasion aligned to New Leaders’ Travel and In-Person Activities policy.

Physical Requirements 

The employee's routine activities involve sitting, talking, hearing, and using hands for tasks like typing, filing, and handling objects. Visual acuity is necessary for keyboard use, data analysis, transcribing, computer terminal viewing, and extensive reading. The role may involve ordinary ambulatory skills for visits to other locations or the ability to perform activities like standing, walking, lifting, carrying, and moving light-weight items. Proficiency in hand-eye coordination, along with dexterity in arms, hands, and fingers for tasks like grasping, operating standard office equipment, and learning technical information, is essential.  

 

What We Offer 

  • Salary Range External: $73,000-$82,000

Note: Salaries vary based on geographical location. After applying, candidates who move forward in the hiring process are provided with a salary for their geographical location.
