Job description

  • Shape practical engineering solutions for storage tank design, integrity, repair and life extension
  • Deliver multidisciplinary projects across mining, oil and gas, fuel storage and heavy industry
  • Strengthen tank engineering tools, standards and ways of working across Fyfe

The Opportunity

Fyfe is strengthening its storage tank engineering capability, and we're looking for a Tank Engineer who can turn complex integrity and design challenges into practical, high-quality solutions.

Reporting to the Mechanical Section Manager, you'll support projects across atmospheric and low-pressure storage tanks and associated equipment. Your work will span tank design, inspection assessment, integrity reviews, repair and modification scopes, and brownfield project delivery.

You'll work alongside principal and senior mechanical engineers, project managers, designers and multidisciplinary teams, contributing technical insight across mining, oil and gas, fuel storage and heavy industrial portfolios. You'll have the opportunity to influence project outcomes, improve engineering practices and help clients make informed decisions about critical assets.

The Impact You'll Have

  • Deliver calculations, technical notes, engineering reports, specifications, datasheets, scopes of work and design documentation for storage tanks and associated systems.
  • Shape tank design, modification, repair, replacement and life-extension solutions across shells, floors, roofs, nozzles, appurtenances and connected piping interfaces.
  • Turn inspection findings, corrosion data, thickness measurements and settlement information into clear engineering risks and practical follow-up actions.
  • Contribute to tank integrity, remaining-life and fitness-for-service assessments, supported by senior or appropriately authorised engineers.
  • Coordinate tank-related inputs across structural, civil, process, piping, electrical and instrumentation disciplines.
  • Strengthen delivery quality by identifying technical risks early and improving tank engineering tools, templates and work practices.

What You'll Bring

You'll bring practical tank or fixed-equipment engineering experience, strong technical judgement and the ability to communicate clear, traceable recommendations.

  • A Bachelor of Engineering in Mechanical Engineering or a closely related engineering discipline from a recognised institution.
  • Relevant experience in storage tanks, fixed equipment, mechanical design, asset integrity, reliability or heavy industrial engineering.
  • Working knowledge of welded storage tank design, inspection, repair and alteration requirements, including API 650 and API 653.
  • The ability to interpret tank drawings, inspection reports, thickness data, settlement surveys, material information and repair documentation.
  • Experience preparing calculations, specifications, scopes, technical reports and practical engineering recommendations.
  • An understanding of brownfield interfaces, constructability, access and operational constraints associated with tank projects.
  • Strong written and verbal English communication skills, with confidence working across multidisciplinary teams and engaging professionally with clients, contractors, inspection providers and vendors.

It would be great if you also have experience in engineering consultancy, mining, oil and gas, petrochemical, fuel storage, terminals or other process industries. Familiarity with API 579/ASME FFS-1, AS 1210, welding requirements, corrosion practices or inspection methods would also be valuable.

Why Fyfe?

Fyfe is an Australian multidisciplinary consultancy specialising in engineering, environment, planning and surveying. We partner with clients across Energy & Resources, Renewables, Infrastructure and Property, delivering practical solutions that support the energy transition and critical infrastructure projects shaping Australia's future.

In this role, you'll have the opportunity to:

  • Put your technical experience to work on complex, operationally important storage assets
  • Contribute across the full tank lifecycle, from design and assessment through to repair, modification and life extension
  • Work directly with experienced engineers, project leaders, clients and multidisciplinary teams
  • Influence the tools, templates and engineering practices that support consistent, high-quality delivery
  • Build broader capability through technical variety, knowledge sharing and guidance to graduate engineers or designers where appropriate

Interested?
