Job description

 The Snapshot

You’d be joining the finance team of a venture-backed US maritime transportation company. They build all-electric vessels that travel just above the water, with the speed of a plane and the convenience of a boat, to make coastal travel faster and cheaper. It’s a team of 150 to 250 people that blends aerospace and maritime expertise. The in-house finance team is strong, and it needs dependable offshore support for day-to-day accounting and weekly payroll.

You’d work with the Director of Finance and the wider finance team, including other offshore colleagues. Most of your week is accounting in NetSuite (roughly 25 to 30 hours), with the rest on weekly payroll in Gusto (roughly 10 to 15 hours).

This role is based in the Philippines, working full-time hours aligned to US Eastern time.

What You’ll Actually Do

This is detail-heavy, deadline-driven work. The numbers have to be right, and the close calendar and the weekly payroll run don’t move.

Accounting in NetSuite (the larger share of your week)

  • Prepare and post journal entries (accruals, prepayments, payroll-related entries) in line with US GAAP and the company’s accounting standards
  • Review general ledger balances, investigate variances and keep the ledger clean and current
  • Reconcile assigned accounts every month: bank accounts, payroll liabilities, prepaid expenses, accrued liabilities and other balance sheet accounts, and resolve discrepancies promptly
  • Prepare clear reconciliation workpapers that the Controller or VP Finance can review easily and that are ready for an audit, and keep supporting documents for every reconciliation and journal entry
  • Complete your assigned month-end close tasks on the close calendar, and prepare schedules and reports when asked (such as payroll expense summaries and headcount reports)
  • Support external audits by providing schedules, workpapers and reconciliation support to the finance team and auditors

Payroll in Gusto (weekly)

  • Prepare payroll for 150 to 250 US employees: check earnings and deductions, reconcile timesheets, confirm benefit deductions, and get each run ready for internal approval and processing
  • Keep employee payroll records accurate in Gusto: new hire setup, pay changes, benefit set-up, tax withholding elections and any employment change that affects pay
  • Handle the non-standard events: off-cycle runs, holiday hours for hourly employees, pay changes, and employees moving between states (updating state tax and recovering over-withheld amounts)
  • Apply US federal and state payroll rules (FICA, income tax withholding, multi-state payroll and payroll tax reporting) so each run is correct before it goes for approval

Documentation

  • Write clear, step-by-step procedures (SOPs) for the payroll and accounting processes you manage, so the work stays consistent and someone else can pick it up if needed

What’s not in this role

  • Accounts payable. An existing team member handles it.

What You Need to Bring

  • Hands-on NetSuite experience at staff accountant level: journal entries, account reconciliations, general ledger management and month-end close
  • Experience as a staff accountant (or similar) working with US companies and applying US GAAP. This is a real requirement because the books are kept to US GAAP and payroll follows US federal and state rules.
  • Hands-on US payroll experience on a recognised platform (Gusto, ADP, Paylocity or similar), including multi-state payroll, deductions, new hire setup and pay changes
  • Working knowledge of US federal and state payroll compliance: FICA, multi-state withholding and payroll tax reporting
  • Care and precision in every entry, reconciliation and payroll run. In a fast-growing, investor-backed business, errors have real consequences.
  • You manage your close tasks to the calendar without being chased, spot irregularities early and raise them, and work well with a team that includes offshore colleagues

Nice to Have

  • Gusto experience (training can be provided for the right person)
  • Manufacturing, hardware or engineering experience: inventory, parts ordering, bills of materials, capital expenditure and fixed assets
  • Big Four or large regional accounting firm background
  • CPA (US), CPA (Philippines), CA, or meaningful progress toward a professional accounting qualification
  • Experience supporting external audits: preparing workpapers, answering auditor requests and keeping documentation audit-ready
  • Strong Excel or Google Sheets skills for reconciliations, workpapers and reporting schedules

The Setup

  • Philippines-based candidates only
  • Full-time, 40 hours a week, Monday to Friday, fully remote
  • Hours follow US Eastern time, which means working overnight: 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM ET (9:00 PM to 6:00 AM Philippine time)
  • Work-from-home equipment provided

What’s In It for You

A stable, full-time role with real accounting and payroll work, in a finance team that is growing and needs the support. If you’re strong in NetSuite, the role can grow into a full NetSuite accounting position.

On top of that, Staffstream looks after you properly:

  • HMO health cover, with one dependent covered for free
  • Group life insurance
  • Paid leave credits
  • Work-from-home equipment provided

You’re employed compliantly under Philippine law: a proper local employment contract, your taxes handled correctly, and all your government-mandated benefits (SSS, PhilHealth, Pag-IBIG) plus 13th month pay. That means real security and peace of mind, not a loose freelance arrangement. Everything is above board and looked after for you.

How This Works

You’d be employed directly by Staffstream, not by the client. We place you with a US business and support you the whole way, handling the local employment side properly so you can focus on the work in front of you.
