Job description

The Motley Fool Canada is looking for a skilled editor to join our team on an independent contract basis, 20-25 hours per week.

Though this role will be fully remote with flexible hours, candidates must be located in Canada for consideration. No exceptions.

Who Are We?

We are The Motley Fool, a purpose-driven financial information and services firm with more than 30 years of experience focused on helping the world invest better.

But what does that even mean?! It means we’re helping Fools (always with a capital “F”) demystify the world of finance, beat the stock market, and achieve personal wealth and happiness through our subscription-based investment advice.

The Motley Fool is firmly committed to diversity, inclusion, and equity. We are a motley group of overachievers that have built a culture of trust founded on Foolishness, fun, and a commitment to making the world smarter, happier and richer. However you identify or whatever winding road has led you to us, please don't hesitate to apply if the description above leaves you thinking, "Hey! I could do that!"

Though The Motley Fool is US-based, we have a thriving Global unit that serves countries both Canada and far-flung Australia. This contractor would be supporting our team in Canada.

What Is a Foolish Editor?

The ideal candidate for this role is just as adept at spotting a comma that should be a semicolon as they are at identifying writing that doesn’t flow properly or a “fact” that seems out of place. We cover the world of Canadian investing and are looking for an editor who can help make sure our writing is polished, sounds great, and is factually accurate. So, yes, a little bit of everything!

  • Copy edit articles to ensure they’re free of grammatical and spelling errors
  • Publish articles in WordPress after adding and checking required metadata (images, stock tickers, stock ownership disclosures, etc)
  • Work with our managing editor to better understand investing concepts so you learn to identify factual errors or items that may be of compliance or regulatory concern
  • Provide feedback to the managing editor about writers and the content that’s being created
  • Provide feedback to writers to help them improve their writing

Required Experience and Skills:

  • Prior experience as an editor, ideally of online editorial-style content
  • Expertise in the realms of grammar, writing style and financial fact-checking
  • High level of organizational skills
  • Ability to self-motivate and stay on track to hit daily deadlines
  • Meticulous attentoin to detail
  • Caught the typo in the last bullet point
  • Strong communication skills
  • Curiosity, flexibility and a good sense of humor!

Ideal Additional Experience and Skills:

  • Some prior knowledge of, or interest in, investing
  • Familiarity with WordPress
  • Some knowledge of SEO best practices
  • Some knowledge of large-language model AI tools
  • Experience with collaboration tools such as Slack and Google apps
