Job description

Seasonal Money Coach – Tax

Department & Reporting

  • Department: Financial Coaching

  • Reports to: VP of Financial Coaching

  • Position type: Seasonal, remote

  • Direct reports: None

Team Win Statement

Coach the financially concerned into financially confident while creating clear sponsor ROI.

Role Win

Turn tax-season confusion into confident member decisions by explaining complex tax topics in plain language that drives session completion and sponsor value.

Role Summary

Tax season is when many members feel most anxious about money, and it is often the moment they first reach out to MSA. The Seasonal Money Coach – Tax meets members in that moment with one-on-one coaching by phone and video, helping them understand their tax documents, filing requirements, deadlines, and how common tax rules apply to their own situation. The ideal coach brings deep individual tax experience and the ability to make complex topics feel manageable, so members leave each session calmer, better prepared, and more likely to come back to MSA for the rest of their financial life. Every confident, well-supported member strengthens the case sponsors make when they renew their partnership with MSA.

Tax Coaching Scope

This is an educational coaching role, not a tax preparation role.

Seasonal Money Coaches do:

  • Provide education on individual tax topics

  • Explain tax concepts and options in plain language

  • Help members understand their tax documents and related information

  • Help members identify practical next steps and appropriate resources

Seasonal Money Coaches do not:

  • Prepare, complete, review for accuracy, or file tax returns

  • Complete tax forms on a member's behalf

  • Represent members before the IRS or state taxing authorities

  • Provide services outside the approved scope of the coaching program

Key Responsibilities

Tax-Focused Coaching Sessions

Deliver one-on-one coaching by phone and video on common federal and state individual income tax topics, including:

  • W-2 and 1099 income

  • Self-employment and gig income

  • Tax withholding and estimated tax payments

  • Filing status and dependents

  • Common deductions and credits

  • Retirement plan and IRA tax considerations

  • Capital gains and losses

  • Education-related tax considerations

  • Homeownership and real estate tax topics

  • Tax implications of major life events

  • IRS notices and general options for addressing them

Plain-Language Education

Translate tax terminology and processes into clear, practical language that fits each member's level of knowledge, so members understand what applies to them without feeling overwhelmed by technical detail.

Next Steps and Referrals

  • Help members identify the questions and information to gather before working with a tax preparer or other professional

  • Recognize situations that call for specialized tax, legal, investment, or other professional help

  • Point members to practical next steps and appropriate resources

Documentation, Quality, and Privacy

  • Keep accurate, timely notes for every coaching session

  • Follow MSA's coaching procedures, quality standards, privacy requirements, and program guidelines

  • Deliver a professional, positive member experience in a high-volume seasonal environment

Current Knowledge and Reliability

  • Stay current on federal tax rules and significant tax-law changes affecting individuals

  • Maintain reliable availability and punctuality across scheduled coaching hours throughout the tax season

Expected Outcomes

  • Members leave clearer and more confident. They understand their tax situation, their documents, and the deadlines that apply to them, and feel more confident about their next financial decision.

  • Members arrive prepared at the next step. Those who need a preparer or other professional know what to ask and what to bring, so their time and money are well spent.

  • Scope is consistently respected. Sessions stay within the program's educational scope, protecting members, MSA, and sponsors.

  • Tax season becomes an entry point to ongoing coaching. Members who first come in with a tax question see the value of MSA coaching and return for other financial goals.

Core Competencies

  • Individual Tax Expertise: Deep working knowledge of individual federal income tax and common state issues, so members get accurate, current education they can rely on.

  • Plain-Language Communication: Explains complex tax concepts simply and supportively, turning a stressful topic into a manageable one.

  • Active Listening and Empathy: Hears what is really driving a member's question and addresses the actual concern, not just the surface topic.

  • Boundary Judgment: Knows where education ends and preparation, legal, or investment advice begins, and keeps every session within scope.

  • Efficiency Under Volume: Stays organized, accurate, and warm across back-to-back sessions and multiple systems during the busiest weeks of the year.

Qualifications & Experience

Required

  • Minimum of 5 years of professional tax experience

  • Demonstrated knowledge of individual federal income tax matters

  • Experience explaining complex tax topics to people with limited tax knowledge

  • Strong verbal communication, active-listening, and interpersonal skills

  • Ability to educate while staying within established coaching and professional boundaries

  • Comfortable coaching by both phone and video

  • Ability to work independently in a remote environment while meeting scheduling, documentation, productivity, and quality expectations

  • Strong computer skills and ability to work efficiently across multiple systems during sessions

  • Reliable high-speed internet and a professional remote-work environment

Preferred

  • CPA (Certified Public Accountant) or Enrolled Agent (EA) credential

Working Context

This is a fully remote, seasonal position, with availability required during peak tax season. Coaching takes place one-on-one by phone and video, and coaches work across MSA's coaching and documentation systems during sessions. Coaches need reliable high-speed internet and a quiet, professional workspace that protects member privacy. No travel is required.
