Lab Automation Specialist

Job Purpose


The Lab Automation Specialist supports the identification, definition, and deployment of laboratory automation solutions across bp's R&D laboratories, but with particular focus on setting up the new Bengaluru Technology Centre for Day 1 operations. Working as part of the Lab Automation, LIMS & Data Management team, the role acts as a key interface between laboratory stakeholders and technical delivery teams, ensuring automation solutions are aligned with business objectives, laboratory operations, safety requirements, and user expectations.

Working closely with scientists, laboratory teams, automation specialists, digital teams, and external partners, the role is responsible for gathering and documenting business requirements, analysing laboratory workflows, and translating user needs into clear requirements that support automation delivery.


Key Accountabilities


  • Facilitate requirements gathering activities through workshops, interviews, process mapping, and stakeholder engagement.
  • Engage with scientists, laboratory personnel, and subject matter experts (SMEs) to understand current processes, challenges, and automation opportunities.
  • Support the definition of project scope, objectives, requirements, and success criteria for laboratory automation initiatives.
  • Document business, process, functional, and data requirements using agreed standards and methodologies.
  • Develop and maintain current-state and future-state process maps.
  • Analyse laboratory workflows to find opportunities to improve safety, efficiency, quality, data integrity, and user experience through automation.
  • Work with wider team, Robotics specialists, Digital Security, Digital delivery, system integrators, and suppliers to translate requirements into solution specifications.
  • Support solution evaluations, testing, validation, deployment, and operational handover activities.
  • Maintain traceability of requirements, actions, risks, assumptions, and decisions throughout project delivery.
  • Promote continuous improvement and the adoption of standardised automation practices across laboratory operations.

Essential Education & Experience


  • Bachelor’s degree as a minimum in science, engineering or a related discipline plus 7 years relevant experience.
  • Experience in business analysis, process & workflow improvement, laboratory operations, automation, manufacturing, or another technical environment.
  • Experience gathering, documenting, and handling business and user requirements.
  • Project management experience
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and process mapping skills.
  • Experience working with stakeholders and facilitating discussions across multidisciplinary teams.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.

Desirable Education & Experience


  • Knowledge of laboratory automation, robotics, laboratory workflows, or scientific operations.
  • Knowledge of Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS), lab data capture and equipment integration.
  • Familiarity with Agile, Waterfall, or hybrid project delivery approaches.
  • Experience working with technology suppliers, vendors, or system integrators.
