 Election Systems & Software (ES&S) is located in Omaha, Nebraska. ES&S is the leading provider of voting machines and systems in North America.

INTERNSHIP PROGRAM DESCRIPTION: This is a full-time, 11-week internship from early June to mid-August 2027. Summer interns typically work from 8:00 am–5:00 pm, Monday through Friday — approximately 40 hours per week. While contributing to department initiatives, interns will also engage in educational experiences that help prepare them for workplace life.

EDUCATIONAL BACKGROUND: Applicants must be junior or senior undergraduate students pursuing a degree in Computer Science, Networking, or a related field.

COMPENSATION: $22 per hour.

LOCATION: On-site at our office in Omaha, Nebraska. This is not a remote opportunity. 

PROFESSIONAL EXPECTATION: ES&S views the Internship Program as a professional learning opportunity. Interns will be held to the same professional standards as all full-time employees. Interns are involved in division, team, and project meetings, take on tasks that impact department goals, and learn new skills.

SUMMARY/OBJECTIVE: The Network & Infrastructure intern will work alongside the ES&S Systems Administration team to support the design, implementation, and administration of the company’s network, server, and storage infrastructure. Working under the guidance of experienced administrators, you will help maintain physical and virtual servers, network equipment, and Microsoft identity and cloud services in accordance with ES&S company goals and security standards. You will assist with defining system requirements, monitoring performance and reliability, troubleshooting and remediating issues, supporting project implementation, and providing post-project support.

SKILLS REQUIRED:

· Strong interest in learning and self-development.

· Basic understanding of:

     -Networking fundamentals (TCP/IP, DNS, DHCP, VLANs, routing and switching)

     -Hypervisors and virtual machines (e.g., VMware vSphere, Hyper-V)

     -Windows Server, Active Directory, and Microsoft Entra ID

     -Data protection, backup, and recovery concepts

     -Scripting (PowerShell or Python)

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

· Coursework or hands-on lab experience with routers, switches, firewalls, or wireless networks.

· Progress toward an industry certification such as CompTIA Network+, CompTIA Security+, or Cisco CCNA.

· Familiarity with Linux administration or cloud platforms (Microsoft Azure or AWS).

JOB FUNCTIONS:

· Assist in maintaining physical and virtual server infrastructure to ensure effective and efficient delivery of IT services in compliance with established guidelines and objectives.

· Support the configuration, monitoring, and troubleshooting of network equipment, including switches, routers, firewalls, and wireless access points.

· Help implement and maintain network security measures, such as firewall rules, network segmentation, and multi-factor authentication, to protect data, software, and hardware.

· Install and test hardware and software updates and enhancements; troubleshoot hardware and software problems in various operating environments; and plan and execute routine maintenance of systems and applications.

· Assist with administration of the VMware vSphere virtualization and server environment.

· Support administration of Active Directory, Microsoft Entra ID, Windows Server, and Microsoft 365 (including Exchange Online).

· Assist with storage, backup, and disaster recovery operations.

· Support patch management for operating systems, firmware, and applications.

· Automate daily and weekly tasks using PowerShell, Python, or other provided tools to improve processes.

· Create and update technical documentation, network diagrams, and runbooks.

· Follow ES&S security policies and change management procedures.

· Participate in and assist with major infrastructure projects.

· Perform other duties as assigned by supervisor.
