Financial Counsellor 

Darwin, NT 
SCHADS Level 3 to Level 5 | Full-time (0.8 negotiable)

About the role 

As a Financial Counsellor, you will support people experiencing financial hardship through advocacy, practical solutions and financial counselling, helping them build resilience and regain control of their financial future. We welcome applications from candidates nearing completion of their Diploma of Financial Counselling, newly qualified practitioners working towards accreditation, and experienced accredited Financial Counsellors. 

This is a permanent full-time position based in Darwin within the Community Engagement – Moneycare team, reporting to the Team Leader. This primarily client-facing role offers hybrid flexibility, including one work from home day per week. Pay is in accordance with a SCHADS Level 3 to Level 5, subject to qualifications, experience and financial counselling accreditation. Part-time hours of 0.8 FTE will also be considered for the right candidate.  

How you will make an impact 

  • Provide financial counselling services to people experiencing financial hardship, vulnerability and crisis 
  • Develop community member centred case plans that support financial stability and wellbeing 
  • Advocate with creditors, service providers and external stakeholders on behalf of clients 
  • Support community members to access services, resources and community supports 
  • Maintain a holistic, strengths-based and culturally respectful approach to service delivery 
  • Monitor and review progress against case plans and agreed outcomes 
  • Maintain accurate records and client data using SAMIS 
  • Support and mentor Financial Capability Workers where appropriate 
  • Build collaborative relationships that improve outcomes for community members 
  • Promote dignity, choice, hope and self-determination in every interaction 
  • On rare occasions, travel to Alice Springs may be required to support the wider team, with all travel expenses fully reimbursed. 

What you will bring 

  • Diploma of Financial Counselling completed, nearing completion, or currently undertaking studies towards qualification 
  • Accreditation with a recognised Financial Counselling Association, or working towards accreditation 
  • Experience working with people experiencing hardship, crisis or vulnerability 
  • Strong advocacy, negotiation and communication skills 
  • Ability to build trusted relationships with people from diverse backgrounds 
  • Experience working with people who may not have English as a first language 
  • Understanding of local Aboriginal communities and culture 
  • Ability to manage competing priorities and work effectively in a dynamic environment 
  • A compassionate, strengths-based and person-centred approach to supporting others 
  • Valid NT Working with Children's Check (Ochre Card) 
  • Current NT Driver's Licence
