Job description

Fractional CFO — Partnering with Owners to Build More Profitable Companies (Remote)

Company: How To MANAGE a Small Law Firm (HTM)

Location: 100% Remote (Must reside in AZ, CO, FL, GA, IL, MD, MI, NC, NJ, NY, PA, TX, VA, or WA)

Department: Executive Leadership

Employment Type: Full-Time | W-2 Employee
Compensation: $110,000 Base Salary + Performance Compensation | $182,000+ On-Target Earnings

Please Read Before Applying

This role is built for CFOs who have spent their careers in the trenches with small and mid-sized business owners — not inside large corporate finance departments.

What we need:

  • 10+ years serving as a CFO (not Controller, not VP of Finance, not FP&A) to small and mid-sized businesses, roughly $1M–$35M+ in revenue
  • Direct, hands-on experience working alongside business owners — not just managing their books, but sitting with them to build pricing strategy, improve margins, strengthen cash flow, and turn the business into a more profitable, more valuable company
  • A track record of advising multiple owner-led businesses over time — as a CFO, Fractional CFO, Outsourced CFO, Virtual CFO, or in a similar multi-client advisory capacity

✅ Have you sat across the table from a business owner and helped them decide what to do about pricing, hiring, or cash flow — and watched the business get healthier because of it? Keep reading.

❌ Has your CFO experience been inside one large company at a time, reporting to a board or PE sponsor rather than partnering directly with an owner? This isn't the right fit — this role depends on that direct owner relationship.

❌ Has your work centered on closing the books, managing an accounting team, or corporate-level financial reporting rather than strategic guidance to an owner? This is a strategic advisory role, not an accounting or controllership role — likely not the right fit.

This is a U.S.-based position. Applicants must currently reside in one of the states listed above and be authorized to work in the U.S. without sponsorship. We're unable to consider candidates residing outside the U.S.

About the Role

At HTM, our CFOs help law firm owners understand their numbers, improve profitability, and make confident business decisions. You'll build the same close, one-on-one relationship with each owner that you'd have as their in-house CFO — but within a structured portfolio model, serving as the financial partner to ~30 growing law firms.

This is a full-time W-2 executive position — not a 1099 consulting gig or independent fractional practice. HTM provides the clients, systems, and infrastructure so you can focus entirely on what you do best: helping owners make better financial decisions.

No legal industry experience required — we'll teach you what you need to know about serving law firms. What we can't teach is knowing how to sit with an owner and tell them what their numbers actually mean for their business.

Why This Beats Running Your Own Practice

If you've built (or considered building) an independent fractional CFO practice, you know the tradeoff: the strategic work — the actual advising — is what you love, but finding clients and running your own back office eats into the time you'd rather spend with owners. At HTM, we remove that burden:

  • No business development — we bring you a full portfolio; you never sell or chase your next engagement
  • Predictable income + upside — guaranteed base plus performance compensation, not feast-or-famine
  • Full benefits, real structure — medical/dental/vision (75% employer-paid), 401(k) match, unlimited PTO, and a built-in team
  • Scale without the overhead — ~30 clients with systems and support staff already in place
  • A fast-growing company behind you — Inc. 5000 Fastest-Growing Company every year since 2013

About HTM

How To MANAGE a Small Law Firm is the nation's leading provider of Fractional C-Suite services for solo and small law firms. Our clients don't need another accountant — they need a financial leader who sits with them, understands their business, and helps them build something more profitable.

What You'll Do

This is hands-on financial leadership, not report-and-explain.

  • Serve as the direct financial partner and advisor to owners across ~30 client businesses
  • Review financial statements and identify where profitability is being won or lost
  • Build forecasts, budgets, cash flow strategies, and KPI dashboards owners actually use
  • Work one-on-one with owners on pricing, margin improvement, and operational profitability
  • Partner with owners on strategic growth decisions, holding them accountable to their goals
  • Help businesses become less reactive and more financially disciplined
  • Build the kind of trusted, long-term relationship an owner would have with their own in-house CFO

What You Bring

  • 10+ years as a CFO, with the majority of that time spent directly advising small to mid-sized business owners ($1M–$35M+ revenue) — not managing internal accounting teams or reporting up through a corporate structure
  • A track record of working hands-on with business owners on pricing decisions, margin improvement, cash flow strategy, and growth planning
  • Experience managing multiple client/owner relationships simultaneously (as a CFO, Fractional CFO, Outsourced CFO, Virtual CFO, Business Advisor, or similar)
  • Strong financial analysis, forecasting, and strategic planning skills, and the ability to translate data into recommendations an owner can act on
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent professional leadership experience
  • Ideal candidates also bring experience in service-based industries (law firms, agencies, consulting), full ownership of financial strategy, and success helping owners scale their business beyond their own day-to-day involvement

Compensation & Benefits

  • $110,000 base + performance compensation ($182,000+ on-target earnings)
  • Medical, dental, vision (75% employer-paid); company-paid short- and long-term disability
  • 401(k) with company match
  • Unlimited PTO, plus a paid Thanksgiving-week shutdown and one additional mandatory paid week off
  • EAP, pet insurance, legal insurance
  • Professional and executive leadership development
  • 100% remote
