Job description

About Engine

Engine is the all-in-one travel and spend management platform trusted by 38K+ businesses and groups representing 1.8M+ travelers. We're the retailer and the rails of business travel, one of the fastest-growing companies in travel tech, built on a decade of proprietary technology, supply, and pricing no one else can replicate. Other travel and AI companies run on our infrastructure to book real trips, hold rates, and move payments, without building any of it themselves. We built it, AI-forward at every layer, from how travelers book to how the rails run.

That work has earned recognition as one of Fast Company's Best Workplaces for Innovators (2025), TravelTech's Reservation Platform of the Year (2026), and one of Built In's Best Places to Work (2020–2026).

We're looking for bold, ambitious people to help redefine how businesses manage and experience travel. Working here, you can expect exponential growth, an ambitious pace, full ownership, and high-caliber colleagues who push you to do the best work of your career. Every hire raises the bar.

Come outpace the ordinary and build the future of travel with us.

As a Senior Infrastructure Engineer, you're a senior voice on Engine's central infrastructure team — the group that owns the substrate every product team at Engine ships on top of. Your work is horizontal by default: the patterns you design, the modules you ship, and the paved roads you maintain are used across every business vertical.

You'll be hands-on with:

  • Cloud infrastructure — the AWS accounts, networking, deployment patterns, and operational tooling that Engine's product teams depend on day to day.
  • Terraform — designing and evolving the shared module registry that feature teams across the company consume.
  • CI/CD — pipeline templates and GitHub Actions workflows that set the standard for how code ships at Engine.
  • Reliability & observability — Datadog dashboards, SLO frameworks, and incident response tooling used org-wide.
  • Security & networking — Cloudflare configuration, IAM boundaries, and secret management as platform-level primitives.
  • Cost visibility — building the tooling and reporting that helps every team understand and act on what they own and spend.

You'll partner closely with feature teams across verticals — not by embedding with them, but by running a tight feedback loop: understanding their friction, prioritizing what deserves a paved road, and shipping platform capabilities that make the right path the easy path.

What You'll Do

  • Set the technical direction for a major area of Engine's infrastructure over a multi-quarter horizon — where it's headed, what you're deliberately not building, and how platform investments compound rather than fragment.
  • Lead multiple infra initiatives in parallel, coordinating across the central team and with the feature teams who'll adopt what you build.
  • Design and ship the Terraform modules, pipeline patterns, and operational tooling that product teams adopt because they're better than the alternative — not because they're mandated.
  • Separate signal from noise across the feature-team requests that land on the central team. Decide what deserves a paved road, what belongs in team-owned space, and what shouldn't be built at all.
  • Own the boring-but-critical work: incident response, on-call quality, deployment reliability, vendor integration health.
  • Shape the guidelines, tools, and methods every engineer at Engine uses — and coach the feature engineers who apply them.
  • Represent the infra team in cross-functional conversations with product and engineering leadership. Our team meets twice a week — that's where you'll share what's shipping, align on priorities, and pressure-test decisions.
  • Reduce the SDLC step-function count across Engine. Every approval gate, every "ask infra first" workflow is a tax — your job is to lower it.

What We're Looking For

Required

  • 6+ years building and operating production cloud infrastructure, with deep AWS expertise (multi-account, networking, IAM, security boundaries).
  • Expert-level Terraform — you've designed reusable modules and have opinions about state, drift, and execution patterns.
  • Strong CI/CD background — GitHub Actions, reusable workflows, OIDC, secret management.
  • A track record of shipping platform infrastructure that feature teams actually adopt — you know how to build for internal customers without losing sight of what makes something feel like a product.
  • A bias toward enabling teams over gatekeeping. You'd rather build the paved road than approve the off-road permits.
  • Experience leading technical direction across multiple teams — making the trade-offs precisely, communicating them clearly, and bringing other engineers along.
  • Instinct for when a problem deserves a central solution and when it should stay with the team that hit it.

Strongly preferred

  • Cloudflare (WAF, DNS, zero-trust/WARP) at production scale.
  • Datadog, JFrog, or comparable vendor integration experience.
  • Background in cost observability or FinOps tooling.
  • History of working on a platform team that serves internal customers — you understand the difference between running a platform and running a gate.
