ANTARCTICA: Traverse Operations Packet Lead

Program Summary 

The National Science Foundation (NSF) manages the United States Antarctic Program (USAP). The USAP supports all U.S. scientific research and related logistics in Antarctica and aboard USAP vessels that operate along the continental margin and in the Southern Ocean. Science within the Antarctic research portfolio is chosen and funded by NSF and other Federal agencies, including NASA, NOAA, and the Department of Energy. The purpose of the Antarctic Science and Engineering Support Contract (ASESC) is to enable that science. 

All participants are responsible for maintaining a safe workplace and ensuring that safety is the highest priority. This includes compliance with all ASESC environmental health & safety, and quality assurance requirements. 

Job Summary 

The Traverse Operations Packet Lead is responsible for leading the planning, coordination, transition, and execution of traverse operations supporting the Antarctic Science and Engineering Support Contract (ASESC). This role provides functional leadership for all aspects of traverse operations, including the movement of personnel, cargo, fuel, scientific equipment, and mission-critical resources throughout the Antarctic continent. They are responsible for ensuring traverse capabilities effectively support program objectives by bringing strong experience in remote operations, transportation logistics, expeditionary field support, and leadership in austere environments. 

*This is a remote position based in the US. 

Roles and Responsibilities  

  • Serve as the primary point of contact for traverse-related operational planning, transition activities, and stakeholder coordination 

  • Coordinate the movement of personnel, equipment, fuel, cargo, and scientific materials between stations and remote field locations 

  • Ensure traverse operations are conducted safely, efficiently, and in compliance with contractual, environmental, and operational requirements 

  • Coordinate with Science Planning, Science Implementation, Logistics, Fleet Operations, Safety, Field Operations, and Station Management teams to support mission objectives 

  • Oversee traverse fleet readiness, equipment availability, maintenance planning, and operational support requirements 

  • Lead route planning efforts, hazard assessments, weather evaluations, and operational risk management activities 

  • Monitor operational performance and identify opportunities to improve safety, reliability, and efficiency 

  • Prepare reports, operational analyses, performance metrics, and executive-level briefings 

  • Support budget planning, resource allocation, and equipment replacement planning activities 

Basic Qualifications  

  • U.S. citizenship and the ability to pass a National Agency Check with Inquiries (NACI) background investigation 

  • Bachelor’s degree in Logistics, Operations Management, Transportation, or a related field; equivalent experience may be substituted in lieu of a degree 

  • Typically 7+ years of experience in transportation operations, logistics, expeditionary operations, or a related field 

  • Experience planning and executing complex transportation, logistics, or field operations involving multiple stakeholders and competing priorities 

  • Strong problem-solving, organizational, and decision-making skills 

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to effectively engage operational, technical, and management personnel 

  • Familiarity with operational planning, logistics, fleet management, or resource management systems 

Preferred Qualifications 

  • Master's degree in Logistics, Transportation, Business Administration, or a related field 

  • Experience leading overland traverse operations or large-scale transportation programs 

  • Experience supporting government contracts, large-scale transitions, or program mobilizations
