Job description

Looking for Philippines-based candidates

Job Role: Senior Accountant

Compensation range: $2,500 AUD - $3,500 AUD / Monthly

Engagement type: Independent Contractor Agreement

Work Schedule: This role is expected to align with the AU business hours (approx. 9 AM - 5 PM, Monday to Friday) for collaboration, but as a contractor, you’ll have flexibility in how you manage your time.

Who We Are: At Hunt St, we help Australian companies hire top remote talent in the Philippines. For this role, you will be engaged directly by the client as an independent contractor. We are not an outsourcing agency. All of our roles are 100% remote so you'll be able to work from home.

Who The Client Is: Our client is an established Australian accounting and business advisory practice supporting a diverse portfolio of businesses with accounting, taxation, compliance, and advisory services. The team works across a range of client structures and industries, providing practical financial support while maintaining a strong focus on accuracy, efficiency, and compliance.

The business has a strong focus on using technology to improve the way accounting work is delivered. They value team members who can take ownership of their work, identify repetitive processes, and find smarter ways to complete tasks through automation, technology, and AI.

This is an opportunity to join an experienced accounting team where you’ll work across a varied client portfolio, take ownership of senior-level accounting and compliance work, and contribute to improving internal workflows and processes.

Role Overview: We’re looking for an experienced Senior Accountant with strong Australian public practice experience to support a portfolio of clients across accounting, taxation, compliance, and financial reporting.

The ideal candidate will have 5+ years of experience in Australian public practice and be confident handling end-to-end accounting and compliance work, including accounts preparation, tax, BAS, and Division 7A matters.

Beyond technical accounting capability, this role is suited to someone who naturally looks for ways to work smarter. You’ll be expected to identify repetitive or inefficient processes and use tools such as Xero, Excel, AI, and automation to improve your own workflows and increase efficiency.

You should be comfortable working with multi-entity and group structures, managing competing priorities across multiple clients, and operating independently while maintaining a high standard of accuracy and compliance.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Manage accounting and compliance requirements across a portfolio of Australian clients
  • Prepare and review financial statements, management accounts, and other financial reports
  • Prepare and manage Australian tax compliance requirements, including individual, company, trust, and related entity tax matters
  • Prepare and review Business Activity Statements (BAS) and ensure relevant compliance obligations are met
  • Assist with Division 7A matters and related compliance requirements
  • Perform reconciliations, journals, month-end processes, and general ledger reviews
  • Work confidently across multi-entity and group structures, ensuring transactions and reporting are accurately managed between related entities
  • Manage client accounting workflows from data processing through to completion and review
  • Use Xero and Excel extensively to manage accounting data, reporting, reconciliations, and client work
  • Identify repetitive or inefficient accounting processes and develop practical ways to automate or streamline them
  • Use AI tools and other technology to improve workflow efficiency, research, documentation, analysis, and routine accounting tasks
  • Maintain accurate and well-organised working papers and supporting documentation
  • Identify discrepancies, compliance issues, and potential risks and take appropriate action
  • Communicate with clients and internal stakeholders regarding accounting, compliance, and financial matters
  • Support senior team members and contribute to the efficient delivery of client work
  • Continuously identify opportunities to improve accounting processes, systems, and workflows

Required Skills and Qualifications:

  • Minimum 5 years of hands-on experience in Australian public practice accounting
  • Proven experience working at a Senior Accountant level within an Australian accounting or business advisory practice
  • Strong Australian accounting and tax compliance knowledge
  • Hands-on experience with accounts preparation, taxation, BAS, and Division 7A
  • Strong understanding of Australian accounting and compliance requirements
  • Experience working with Xero and strong proficiency in Microsoft Excel
  • Demonstrated experience managing multiple clients and/or multi-entity/group structures
  • Proven ability to manage accounting workflows independently from preparation through to completion
  • Demonstrated experience identifying repetitive tasks and automating or streamlining personal accounting workflows
  • Practical experience using AI tools such as ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, or similar to improve accounting workflows, research, analysis, documentation, or productivity
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and attention-to-detail skills
  • Excellent written and verbal English communication skills
  • Ability to work independently while managing multiple deadlines and priorities
  • Strong organisational skills and a proactive approach to process improvement
  • High level of professional integrity when handling confidential client and financial information

Nice to Have:

  • CA or CPA qualification
  • Experience working with complex corporate, trust, partnership, or group structures
  • Experience with accounting practice management or workflow software
  • Experience implementing automation across accounting or compliance workflows
  • Experience working with Australian SME clients
  • Advanced Excel skills, including financial models, complex formulas, Power Query, or similar
  • Experience using additional accounting platforms or practice management systems

Work Arrangement & Expectations:

This is a remote role that will be set up as an independent contractor engagement.

To ensure alignment and transparency, successful candidates will be expected to:

  • Disclose any existing ongoing roles or client work
  • Reflect this engagement on their LinkedIn profile (clearly marked as “Independent Contractor”)

This is a full-time Senior Accountant position working closely with an Australian public practice team. The role requires someone who can take ownership of their client work, operate confidently at a senior level, and contribute not only through strong technical accounting skills but also by finding smarter and more efficient ways of working.
