This is a full-time remote position. Employees may work from anywhere within the contiguous 48 states of the United States.

Travel is up to 20%. Travel expenses for business needs will be covered by BNSF.

The BNSF Tech Internship Program is designed for current college students eager to launch their careers in technology and innovation within the freight rail industry. This internship program offers a deep dive into BNSF Railway’s operations, culture, and technology organization.   

Training will start with a two-day in person orientation at our Corporate Headquarters in Fort Worth, Texas, offering a company overview and networking opportunities with leaders. This will be followed by support on ongoing projects and practical training with the department.

After orientation, you will gain insights into the railroad industry, BNSF’s strategic vision and how bnsf | tech is transforming the future of rail freight.  During this time, tech interns will engage in hands-on coding challenges and collaborative problem solving. Employees are assigned to teams where they contribute to impactful projects aimed at improving operational efficiency, reliability and innovation across the BNSF network. Interns will gain formal training and hands-on experience in a fast-paced innovative environment while receiving support from managers and mentors along the way.

platform engineering: develop solutions that connect with our customers through advanced marketing, unified identity and communication services. Our platform engineers optimize strategies and deliver innovative services to support operations.  

data & ai: lead our charge into the future as an ai company by transforming our data assets into a real-time enterprise.  

infrastructure: build rail’s first hybrid cloud to enable millions of freight transactions a day with an open-source stack that delivers the lowest unit cost of technology.  

enterprise engineering: empower the workforce with cutting-edge collaboration tools and services. Our enterprise engineers boost productivity, enhance mobility and ensure reliable systems for finance, human resources legal operations and more.  

cybersecurity: protect the company, our customers and employees against cyber threats and innovate engineering solutions for a more resilient rail network.

Develop APIs, automation, and tools to improve platform integration.  

Build and maintain monitoring and alerting systems for services.  

Collaborate with application teams to enhance reliability and performance.  

Design and operate scalable systems across data centers, edge devices, and the cloud.  

Work with BNSF teams to create products that improve rail network operations.  

Innovate in distributed computing and drive industry transformation.  

Build solutions for high-speed, large-scale predictions on distributed systems.  

Solve broad challenges by coding effective solutions in an agile environment.

Basic Qualifications  

  • Does not require BNSF’s assistance, now or in the future, (whether monetary, through sponsorship, or otherwise) to obtain, maintain, or extend employment authorization (including H-1B, STEM OPT/CPT, or TN nonimmigrant status). 
  • Pursuing a bachelor’s degree or higher in Computer Science, Information Technology, Data Science, Artificial Intelligence or a related degree program from an accredited university. 
  • Have and will maintain at least a 2.75 cumulative GPA.  
  • Have LESS THAN three (3) years of professional work experience, EXCLUDING internships, part-time jobs, or positions held while pursuing undergraduate and/or graduate degree.  
  • Experience programming with at least one modern language such as Java, C++, or C# including object-oriented design.  
  • Ability to work in cross-functional teams and communicate with stakeholders.  
  • Demonstrated ability to learn new technical concepts and to adapt to new technologies quickly.  
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills.  

Preferred Qualifications  

  • Prior intern experience or less than 3 years of work experience in technology, software engineering, or a related field.  
  • Familiarity with frameworks like React, Angular, Node.js, Spring Boot
