Job description

Meet the Moment with Alteryx

We're living through a once-in-a-generation shift in how work gets done. Data, automation, and AI are quickly becoming the center of every business decision - and Alteryx is leading the transformation.

You'll be working on the challenges that sit at the heart of modern business. No matter your role, the work you do will help organizations move faster, see more clearly, and tackle questions that used to feel impossible.

If you're ready to meet the moment with innovation, curiosity, and excellence, there's a place for you here.

Alteryx is looking for a Senior Manager, Software Engineering to lead a large, multidisciplinary engineering team building and operating AI-powered analytics products used by customers around the world.

In this role, you will lead a remote team of 10+ engineers across Australia, spanning backend, frontend, full-stack, data science, and platform engineering. Your team will own customer-facing product capabilities as well as the services and infrastructure required to make them reliable, secure, scalable, and performant.

You will partner closely with Product Management, UX Design, Technical Program Management, senior technical leads, architects, and engineering leaders to translate product and technology strategy into meaningful customer and business outcomes.

This is a senior engineering leadership role. You will maintain enough technical depth to provide sound engineering judgment, review significant technical proposals, and help navigate critical architectural and operational decisions. However, your primary focus will be building strong teams, developing technical leaders, and delivering results through others rather than serving as the team's primary hands-on engineer.

A Day in Your Life Will Include

  • Lead, coach, and develop a multidisciplinary team of 10+ engineers, including hiring, performance management, succession planning, and career development.
  • Build leadership capability among senior engineers and technical leads, creating strong and sustainable technical ownership across the team.
  • Partner with Product Management to shape product and technical strategy and translate priorities into clear roadmaps and execution plans.
  • Lead delivery across complex, cross-functional dependencies while identifying systemic execution gaps and improving transparency, predictability, and delivery effectiveness.
  • Guide architectural consistency and review significant technical proposals across backend services, frontend experiences, data systems, and cloud infrastructure in partnership with senior engineers and architects.
  • Own operational outcomes across service reliability, scalability, performance, security, cost optimization, observability, incident learning, and technical debt reduction.
  • Champion the effective use of AI-assisted and agentic development practices throughout the software development lifecycle while maintaining strong standards for engineering ownership, testing, review, security, and quality.
  • Communicate progress, risks, technical context, trade-offs, and recommendations clearly to senior leadership and cross-functional stakeholders.

What You'll Need

  • 10+ years of experience owning and delivering mission-critical software platforms, core systems, or complex SaaS products.
  • Demonstrated success as an engineering manager, delivering outcomes beyond a single team or across a complex technical domain.
  • Strong experience with distributed systems and leading teams responsible for scalable cloud services, production infrastructure, and customer-facing software.
  • Strong engineering judgment across architecture, system design, service boundaries, data flows, performance, reliability, security, and operational trade-offs.
  • Experience improving engineering quality through automated testing, CI/CD, observability, incident management, secure development practices, and disciplined technical debt management.
  • A strong track record of coaching engineers at different career levels, developing technical leaders, and delivering results through others.
  • Proven ability to influence product and engineering strategy and align teams across Product, Design, Architecture, Platform, SRE, InfoSec, and Engineering.
  • Experience navigating ambiguity, organizational change, competing priorities, and incomplete information while maintaining clarity, focus, and team engagement.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to communicate effectively with technical, product, customer-facing, and executive audiences.

Our Technology Environment

Alteryx's technology stack includes:

  • Backend: Kotlin, Python, Java, C#, TypeScript
  • Databases: PostgreSQL and other relational data technologies
  • Messaging & Streaming: RabbitMQ, Kafka
  • Cloud: Azure, GCP, AWS
  • Containers & Orchestration: Docker, Kubernetes
  • Infrastructure as Code: Terraform, Ansible
  • CI/CD & Observability: GitLab CI/CD, Datadog, and related tooling.

You don't need experience with every technology in our stack. We're looking for someone who has worked with comparable modern technologies and can apply strong engineering judgment within a complex SaaS environment.

Bonus Points

  • Demonstrated experience applying agentic or AI-assisted development practices across the software development lifecycle, including human oversight, evaluation, testing, security, and governance at scale.
  • Experience developing AI-powered products, agentic applications, LLM integrations, agent frameworks, or AI platform capabilities.
  • Experience building data or analytics products, particularly within business intelligence, data platforms, decision intelligence, or adjacent industries.
  • Experience leading teams responsible for operating and modernizing microservices, Kubernetes-based platforms, infrastructure as code, or multiple deployment models.
  • Experience mentoring peer managers or contributing to broader engineering leadership practices beyond direct reporting lines.

Find yourself checking a lot of these boxes but doubting whether you should apply? At Alteryx, we support a growth mindset for our associates through all stages of their careers. If you meet some of the requirements and you share our values, we encourage you to apply. As part of our ongoing commitment to a diverse, equitable, and inclusive workplace, we’re invested in building teams with a wide variety of backgrounds, identities, and experiences.
