Role Overview

Reporting to the Manager, Administration, the Assistant Controller supervises and directs activities of the accounting department (accounting, accounts payable and payroll). Coordinating with internal site departments, corporate, external auditors and related stakeholders, responsible for all period end reporting, internal control compliance and information requests.

Please note this position requires the successful incumbent to relocate to Williams Lake, BC, or the surrounding area. This is not a permanent remote working position.

Core Responsibilities

  • Supervise and direct activities of the accounting staff (Accountants/Accounts Payable/Payroll).
  • Provide direct reports with clear understanding of responsibilities and expected outcomes. Provide resources to achieve same.
  • Coordinate month end reporting schedules, ensuring prescribed deadlines are accurately met.
  • Coordinate and prepare monthly/quarterly suite of working papers and account reconciliations.
  • Coordinate and provide requests for information and data to head office, auditors & related stakeholders.
  • Coordinate inputs and prepares updates to the monthly forecast and annual budget models.
  • Produce and issue mine site cost reports to all functional stakeholders. Supplement with ad-hoc cost reporting.
  • Ensures adherence to SOX internal controls. Updates related documentation as controls change or evolve. Ensures functional areas are reviewing and updating their control documents.
  • Manages and oversees mine site payroll requirements per the collective bargaining agreement and staff handbooks.
  • Provides financial support to all business unit stakeholders, specifically in the areas of costing and transaction flow.
  • Coordinate inputs and prepares property, plant and equipment and capital project reporting.
  • Manages and modifies approved changes to the ERP system.
  • Ensures direct reports are provided with opportunities to advance skillsets either via in-service training or external programs to include but not limited to webinars and on-line courses.
  • Actively cross-trains accountant and junior accountant with focus on succession planning and/or absence coverage.
  • In the absence of the Manager, Administration, provide coverage for same.

Education & Experience

  • Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA) designation.
  • 5+ years experience in a related finance or accounting field.
  • 5 – 10 years’ experience in mining or industrial setting an asset.
  • Experience in a public company internal control and reporting environment compliant with IRFS and Sarbanes-Oxley (SOX).
  • Experience with complex ERP and reporting systems. Specific experience with 4Site, FrX and Prophix an asset.

Skills & Competencies

  • Proficiency in financial accounting and reporting including production of internal financial statements.
  • Complex accounting preparation including production inventory (WIP, final, stockpile) costing and valuation, asset retirement obligation, right-of-use and capital leases, capital assets including construction in progress and componentisation.
  • Preparation, review and analysis of operating budgets and forecasts.
  • Industrial operating site cost reporting and analysis.
  • Preparation and review of period end working papers and other reporting documentation.
  • Able to prioritise work in a complex operating environment.
  • Ability to work on own initiative as well as being a team player.
  • Good interpersonal and communication skills, including the ability work with staff at all levels in the company, and able to communicate with both technical and non-technical people.
  • Valid driver’s license.
