Job Description

The Field Service Engineer provides highly visible customer support through the performance of on-site installation, as well as overseeing any necessary diagnoses, troubleshooting, service, and repair of complex equipment and systems. The Field Engineer will instruct customers in the operation and maintenance of the system and serve as company liaison with customer on administrative and technical matters for assigned projects. This role may include any aspect of field support, and is not limited to system hardware and software, PCs, and networking/wireless networking.

Location: Remote Field role primarily based in Edmonton, AB, servicing customers located in AB, BC, SK, MB, and YT, with potential travel requirements into ON, QC, and other eastern regions as necessary from time to time.

Job Responsibilities

  • Perform installations, maintenance, validations, and repairs while ensuring compliance with PerkinElmer’s service standards and key performance indicators.
  • Provide troubleshooting, repair, and qualification services for customers including warranty services within a prescribed time frame and established maintenance protocols.
  • Engage with customers to understand their analytical workflows and tailor service offerings, including training, support, and upgrades.
  • Enhance account profitability through efficient service execution and by identifying revenue opportunities such as billable work, consumables, and service leads.
  • Maintain assigned assets, including tools, test equipment (MTE), telecommunication equipment, and service parts inventory.
  • Enhance PerkinElmer’s product quality by proactively reporting improvement opportunities via the quality notification process.
  • Attend higher level certification through participation in company sponsored training & development offerings
  • Complete all administrative tasks, including but not limited to time reporting and assigned training.
  • Maintain training and compliance in areas of health and safety, security, environmental and operational aspects of daily activities in the working environment.

Basic Qualifications:

  • BA Bachelor Degree in Applied Science, Biology, Chemistry, Electronics, Mathematics, Engineering, or related discipline including military experience plus 3 years direct experience with repair of laboratory equipment OR
  • Associate Degree in Applied Science, Biology, Chemistry, Electronics, Mathematics, Engineering, or related discipline including military experience plus 5 years direct experience with repair of laboratory equipment OR
  • High School Diploma plus 7+ years direct experience with repair of laboratory equipment
  • Eligibility requires a minimum 2+ years of laboratory and/or field service experience
  • Advanced knowledge of analytical equipment, laboratory environment, and/or instrument control software
  • Ability to travel flexibly as required for business purposes, including travel by air, vehicle, or other means of transportation. Travel may vary based on territory needs, customer requirements, and service delivery demands. The role requires flexibility for non‑standard travel, including occasional weekend and holiday travel.
  • This position will involve international travel, including travel to the United States (for training). Candidates must have the appropriate legal authorization to travel to the U.S.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license. While performing the duties of this position you must always maintain safe motor vehicle operation

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Vendor issued certification on relevant laboratory equipment
  • Experience using Microsoft 365 and other business software platforms
  • Has demonstrated experience in handling advanced and complicated technical and interpersonal escalations
  • Demonstrated ability to drive miscellaneous business projects through completion
  • Willing to comply with our customers requirements around alcohol & drug testing when necessary
  • Will likely start in techniques such as Inductively Coupled Plasma (Optical and Mass Spectrometry) and also Chromatography products.
  • Ability to follow written and verbal directions, read and understand technical bulletins and service manuals/schematics drawings, work under time constraints, maintain alertness and concentration, work safely with potential electrical, chemical, radiologic, and biologic hazards using universal precautions
  • Provide support and collaborate with the sales team on local sales efforts, contract sales, and related initiatives

Working Environment:

  • Must be able to work in a laboratory, controlled environments requiring personal protective equipment (e.g., lab coat, safety glasses, etc.) in laboratory. 
  • Job pace may be fast and job completion demands may be high. 
  • Must be able to remain in a stationary position more than 25% of the time. 
  • The person needs to occasionally move between labs, corridors, adjoining rooms, and buildings onsite Frequently operate on instruments, objects, tools or controls, which will require regularly bending, squatting, stretching and reaching in order to perform in a service function.   
  • Occasionally move or lift up to 25 pounds (potential for occasional lifting of up to 50 pounds). 
  • Specific vision abilities required by this position include without limitation, the ability to observe details at close range distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus in order to perform the essential service functions of this position.   
  • Occasionally operates a computer and other office machinery, such as a calculator, copy machine, and computer printer. 
  • Employee may be required to handle hazardous waste according to local, state, and federal regulations.  Duties may include identifying, handling, generating, accumulating, storing and labeling hazardous waste. 
  • Potential risk to lab-based hazards including but not limited to extreme temperature, biological materials, and hazardous chemicals.
  • May be required to complete Medical Clearance, Respiratory Protection Training, and Fit Testing to wear a respirator as protection against hazards present in the laboratory environment.

The annual compensation range for this full-time position is $60,000.00 CAD  to $80,000.00 CAD. The final base pay offered to the successful candidate will be determined by factors including internal equity, work location, as well as individual qualifications, such as job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training.
