Engineering Manager

Salary: £80,000 per annum, plus company benefits

Location: Remote, United Kingdom

Contract: Full Time, Permanent

Shifts: 37.5 hours per week, Monday – Friday, 9am until 5:30pm with 1 hours unpaid lunch break

Purpose of role 

The Engineering Manager is a key role, responsible for guiding and developing a high-performing engineering team. This position combines strategic oversight with hands-on technical leadership to foster a culture of excellence, innovation, and inclusivity. The Engineering Manager is accountable for nurturing talent, driving technical quality, and ensuring successful delivery against the product roadmap. Through effective people management and strategic planning, the role ensures the team is aligned with business objectives and consistently delivers impactful results.

Key responsibilities 

People Management & Development

  • Lead, mentor, and manage a team of 5-8 engineers, supporting their career growth through regular 1-on-1s, performance reviews, and development plans.
  • Drive all aspects of hiring, including recruitment, interviewing, and onboarding, to build a high-performing and diverse team.
  • Cultivate a positive, inclusive, and psychologically safe team culture, managing morale, engagement, and addressing team dynamics.

Technical Leadership & Delivery

  • Own your team's delivery outcomes, velocity, and operational excellence, ensuring system reliability, performance, and scalability.
  • Set technical standards, guide architectural decisions, and ensure code quality through reviews and effective management of technical debt.
  • Lead production incident response and post-mortem processes to drive continuous improvement.

Strategic & Stakeholder Management

  • Partner closely with Product, Design, Security and other stakeholders to plan roadmaps, manage dependencies, and ensure alignment with product and organizational objectives.
  • Manage team capacity, identify and mitigate risks, and communicate progress and blockers effectively to leadership and stakeholders.
  • Contribute to the departmental technical strategy and drive innovation within your team.

Key Skills, Attributes & Capabilities

We are looking for someone who will demonstrate the following:

  • Leadership: Proven leadership skills with the ability to inspire, coach, and mentor engineers.
  • Technical Acumen: Strong technical background in software engineering principles and modern methodologies (e.g., Agile, DevOps, CI/CD).
  • Communication & Stakeholder Management: Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills, with high emotional intelligence and the ability to build trust.
  • Strategic & Business Acumen: A strategic thinker with strong problem-solving skills and the ability to translate business priorities into technical execution.
  • Personal Attributes: A champion for diversity, equity, and inclusion and a commitment to continuous learning and improvement.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or related field.
  • 8+ years of software engineering experience, including delivery of complex systems.
  • 2+ years of direct people management experience, including performance and career development.
  • Demonstrable experience leading Agile/Scrum teams and driving continuous improvement.
  • Experience with project budgeting, resource planning, and reporting.
  • Familiarity with modern DevOps practices and cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, GCP).
  • Ability to advise on technical strategy and ensure alignment with business objectives.
  • Master’s degree in CS, Engineering, or MBA.
  • Certifications in Agile/Scrum, Leadership, or Cloud Architecture.
  • Experience in governance, compliance, or risk management.
  • Track record of mentoring engineers and fostering inclusive team culture.
  • Exposure to scaling teams, distributed systems, and enterprise-level architecture.
