Job description

Who we are

Helsing is a defence AI company. Our mission is to protect our democracies. We aim to achieve technological leadership, so that open societies can continue to make sovereign decisions and control their ethical standards.

As democracies, we believe we have a special responsibility to be thoughtful about the development and deployment of powerful technologies like AI. We take this responsibility seriously.

We are an ambitious and committed team of engineers, AI specialists and customer-facing programme managers. We are looking for mission-driven people to join our European teams, and apply their skills to solve the most complex and impactful problems. We embrace an open and transparent culture that welcomes healthy debates on the use of technology in defence, its benefits, and its ethical implications.

The role

As Safety Manager (System Safety), you will lead the system-safety domain across our platforms. You will develop and maintain the System Safety Programme Plan (SSPP) and coordinate hazard identification, preliminary hazard analysis (PHA), risk assessment and system-level safety architecture. You will ensure safety requirements trace cleanly to system functions, and lead system-wide safety activities that identify, assess and mitigate weapon-specific safety requirements. Your work integrates every weapon safety demand into the system safety lifecycle and keeps our systems compliant with applicable regulations. You make sure the technology that protects our democracies is safe by design, and safe in the field.

The day-to-day

  • Develop and maintain the System Safety Programme Plan (SSPP) as the authoritative reference for all system-safety activities
  • Coordinate hazard identification, preliminary hazard analysis (PHA) and risk assessment across the system safety lifecycle
  • Define and govern system-level safety architecture, ensuring full traceability of safety requirements to system functions
  • Aide the process of getting newly developed systems into service by assessing the system safety and deriving necessary evidence (e.g. SAR)
  • Lead the identification, assessment and mitigation of weapon-specific safety requirements, integrating them into the system safety lifecycle
  • Ensure compliance with applicable safety regulations and standards across all system-wide safety deliverables

You should apply if you

  • Lead system-safety programmes and own artefacts such as the SSPP end to end
  • Conduct hazard identification, PHA and risk assessment across complex systems
  • Define system-level safety architecture and maintain traceability from requirements to functions
  • Assess and mitigate weapon-specific safety requirements within a system safety lifecycle
  • Interpret and apply relevant safety regulations and standards in a defence or safety-critical context
  • Communicate fluently in German and English (C1 or equivalent) to collaborate internationally and locally

Note: We operate in an industry where women, as well as other minority groups, are systematically under-represented. We encourage you to apply even if you don’t meet all the listed qualifications; ability and impact cannot be summarised in a few bullet points.

Nice to have

  • Familiarity with functional safety standards such as MIL-STD-882 or comparable frameworks
  • Working knowledge of safety practices in weapon systems or safety-critical aerospace platforms

What we offer

  • Competitive salary and VSOP options
  • Relocation support: up to €2,500 and 4 weeks temporary accommodation
  • Learning: €500/£450 yearly allowance
  • Health & wellness: gym membership and mental health support (Nilo.health)
  • Social: regular company events and monthly social allowances
  • Enhanced parental leave: 22 weeks fully paid for primary caregivers & 6 weeks for secondary caregivers
  • Family support: 5 days of paid family emergency leave, 100% remote work option during pregnancy and phased return to work

These are the core benefits across all locations; there may be additional benefits in specific sites.
