Position Summary:
 

The Career and Transfer Advisor for Public Services & Industrial Technology provides accurate information in the advising process including the following: career exploration, course selection, graduation requirements, articulation, transfer information, and career readiness preparation while considering the prominence of student retention for students in their chosen career program. The advisor demonstrates a good understanding of each Public Services, Business and IT pathway and the necessary pre-requisites. The primary focus of the advisor will be to assist students with selection of course(s) for educational goal, course scheduling and degree audits to ensure progress toward graduation and student success. Retention efforts will include holistic advising, referral to appropriate student supports, provide information regarding program of student interest, proper course sequence, and specific monitoring of progress of student who are not in college-level coursework, and guidance to new program options as applicable if student is not chosen for their primary program of interest. The new advisor will collaborate with their fellow Career and Transfer, divisional advisor(s) and the Director of Academic Advising to focus efforts for student success of students within this division.

Position responsibilities:

 

  • Providing career and academic information to a diverse community college student population
  • Participating in Career and Job Fairs, advising, registration, and student orientation events
  • Assisting students with the development and updating of an education plan
  • Assisting with course selections
  • Consulting with students about future education planning
  • Maintaining student success by providing guidance on different Workforce career pathways
  • Meeting with students through in-person, phone and virtual advising appointments
  • Keeping abreast of current education practices
  • Providing information about transfer colleges and universities
  • Working with appropriate resource persons to provide students with realistic information about courses
  • Providing accurate realistic information on job opportunities and job placement services
     

Minimum Position Requirements:
 

  • Must possess a minimum of a bachelor’s degree
  • Must possess excellent written and verbal communication skills (email, phone, & in-person)
  • Must provide good customer service and interact with students in a positive manner
  • Have general skills in keyboarding and computer usage
  • Have the ability to multitask
  • Be well organized and thorough
  • Be able to work well with little supervision
  • Deal professionally and courteously with a diverse student and employee population
  • This is a 12-month position

Physical Demands and Work Environment:
 

  • Work is normally performed in a typical interior/office work environment.
  • No or very limited physical effort required; however, the employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 15 pounds.
  • No or very limited exposure to physical risk.

  • Provide resources for safe operation of units. Create and support workplace safety.

All full-time positions are located in Kilgore, TX. No fully work from home positions are available at this time. All employees must be available to physically present to work on the Kilgore, TX or Longview, TX Campus. Some Part-Time and Adjunct positions may be offsite but the candidate MUST live in the State of Texas.

Positions will remain open until filled. Some Adjunct and Part-Time teaching positions may remain open perpetually as the need for part time instructors fluctuates with student enrollment. Teaching positions will be required to submit official transcripts upon an offer of employment. An offer of employment will be contingent upon passing a background check.
