Director, Strategic Communications & AI Workflows

Job Description

The Director, Strategic Communications & AI Workflows will lead Kaplan’s external reputation strategy and narrative advancement in an AI-driven media landscape, while helping modernize Kaplan’s communications processes by integrating AI-driven workflows. This individual has a growth mindset, internal and external communications experience, is an exceptional writer with strong interpersonal skills, a seasoned media strategist, highly organized, and an AI-eager project manager. This role sits within a small, senior, hands-on team and will have meaningful access to and support from leadership – the right candidate is self-directed but never unsupported.

Primary/Key Responsibilities

  • Promote Kaplan’s Narrative: Amplify the Kaplan story across external channels in support of Kaplan’s business goals
  • Lead Media Strategy & Crisis Communications: Lead responsive efforts to ensure fair and accurate coverage in the event of false or damaging narratives 
  • Advance Brand Content Focus on AI Optimization: Review Kaplan’s performance and develop familiarity with GEO data to tailor our brand-level content development strategy 
  • Lead Brand-Level GEO Content Strategy: Develop and execute content strategy to ensure that Kaplan’s brand-level narrative is accurately reflected and optimized in AI search and generative engines
  • AI-Savvy Project Management: Experiment with, identify, and champion AI solutions that can be incorporated into Communications team workflows to enable greater efficiency and scale while keeping projects on track  
  • Drive Process Innovation: Identify tools and methods to optimize existing workflows, and lead the team in reimagining how core functions are structured and executed.
  • Support Executive Leads on high-impact communications and brand deliverables, including hands-on content development across formats as needed

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree and/or equivalent work experience
  • 10+ years of Communications and PR experience
  • Exceptional Communicator: Must be a skilled writer with a natural storytelling instinct and messaging discipline to shape and advance a narrative
  • Nimble and Scrappy: Equally comfortable with owning the strategy and doing the work to execute it, shifting fluidly between projects without losing the thread
  • Strong interpersonal skills: Excellent collaborator and team player who brings the diplomacy, discretion and interpersonal instincts to build trust with senior leaders 
  • AI-Savvy: Does not need to be a technologist, but should be very comfortable using and experimenting with AI and eager to learn
  • Maturity of Judgment: Must be able to navigate sensitive situations independently and know when to escalate
  • Extremely organized: Must be able to keep team projects on track

Preferred Qualifications

  • Motivated to learn and stay ahead of trends
  • Familiar with Gemini suite of tools (not required, but a plus)

The salary range for this position is $120,300-$133,600 per year and the amount that is offered is based on the candidate's skills, experience and education, among other factors determined by the business. It is within Kaplan's discretion to adjust this range based on business needs.
