Job Summary:
The Principal Product Designer, Design Systems will own the growth and development of the Neumo design system, working closely with product, technology, and senior company leadership to help Neumo succeed. This role is responsible for leading the creation, organization, and implementation of Neumo’s UX design system of visual style, UI components, and other design concerns to build and integrate consistent, efficient components across the product portfolio. Enable fellow design and product partners with the documentation needed to leverage, contribute to, scale, and evolve our library. The role will also lead and work closely with design system developers in a collaborative effort to define, build, and maintain reusable code components that empower other development teams.
This role will also be a key player in the product development process, from initial research and ideation to the final design and testing phases. They champion a user-centered design approach by contributing to product development initiatives that create a user experience that is differentiated in the market. This role helps define the overall user experience of Neumo products by our customers, including the businesses and citizens who interact with the systems on a day-to-day basis to engage with state and local government agencies.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Lead design system work, collaborating closely with stakeholders to drive product strategy and prioritize work.
- Oversee all the development of Neumo’ visual design system, making those components, patterns, and strategies available to product designers.
- Help product teams build polished, inclusive experiences for our customers by designing and iterating components while guiding the team on the best ways to use them.
- Partner with product managers and engineers to define the design system roadmap and backlog and to ensure strategic alignment.
- Collaborate with designers on other products to create aligned experiences.
- Make the wider design team better by leading initiatives to improve our design components, patterns, and templates.
- Bring accessibility into all design system work.
- You are adept at leading and developing others and have the passion and ability to manage the professional development of direct reports.
- Conduct user research and usability testing to understand user needs and pain points.
- Create wireframes, prototypes, and high-fidelity mockups to translate design concepts into tangible representations for feedback and testing.
- Collaborate with an agile team of product managers and developers to ensure designs align with product goals, user needs and technical feasibility.
- Participate in cross-functional team discussions to provide design expertise and advocate for the user perspective.
- Leverage UX design thinking with our growing product development team and to the entire organization.
- Stay up-to-date on design trends, industry best practices, and emerging technologies to continuously improve design solutions.
- Ensure that Neumo products are user-friendly and intuitive to attract and retain customers.
- Perform other Duties as assigned.
Education and Experience:
- Solid UX/UI design portfolio with 8+ years of experience in a B2B enterprise SaaS environment. A portfolio demonstrating systematic product thinking and superior craft, including user flows, design components, User Experience (UX), and User Interface Design (UI).
- Previous experience managing others.
- Experience working with full-featured design systems, including shared design libraries with coded counterparts.
- Extensive experience in modular-based, responsive design to deliver powerful applications that scale from mobile experiences for the consumer to immersive, desktop-based applications for the enterprise user.
- Sound understanding of accessibility, inclusive design, and commitment to ongoing learning in these areas.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- A true systems thinker who can pay attention to detail while considering the whole user experience.
- Ability to weigh multiple competing priorities and constraints to find the best path forward.
- Experience advocating design decisions, communicating design rationale, and evaluating designs based on established best practices, research, data, technical feasibility, and business strategy.
- Graceful at juggling multiple priorities and navigating between strategic work and tactical execution.
- Have experience managing shared design libraries used by other designers and teams (Figma ideal).
- Stay up to date on design trends, industry best practices, and emerging technologies to continuously improve design solutions.
- Experience collaborating with customers, cross-functional technical teams, and stakeholders to deliver successful projects and solve problems.
- Thrive in a collaborative UX environment, fostering a positive, human-centered approach alongside enthusiastic and creative teams.
- Experience working in an agile/scrum development process using Jira or similar software.
- Demonstrate strong written and verbal communication skills.
Work Environment:
- The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate as the employee works in an office setting, at an individual work station, using telephone and computer
Physical Demands:
- Must be able to remain in a stationary position for most of the day
- Constantly operates a computer and other office productivity machinery, such as a printer/copy machine
