Senior Policy Manager

UK – homebased, travel required (up to ~20% of the time)

About the role

BSI Regulatory Services is evolving, seeking to generate new business opportunities in our existing sectors and move into new areas, where we can deliver gold standard services to clients and build BSI’s reputation for excellence.

The purpose of this role is to lead a small team working to establish strong relationships globally with key legislators, regulators and other relevant bodies to allow BSI to influence the direction of regulation in sectors where we operate or wish to operate. The role will also be responsible for engaging with these external stakeholders on specific projects where BSI wishes to expand to offer services as a third-party actor on their behalf.

You will be part of a team working across regulatory jurisdictions, developing new approaches and new ways of working with these key stakeholder groups, and supporting the delivery of key strategic projects.

Responsibilities:

RS Strategy Development & Business Planning

• Own and deliver the engagement strategy for key influencers of regulatory policy in governments and regulators, business associations, NGOs, think-tanks and academics, focusing on those who are shaping regulatory policy debates in the sectors where Regulatory Services operates, or wishes to operate.

• Oversee the development of thought leadership content, white papers, and policy briefs on Regulatory Services sectors’ related topics, to educate stakeholders and influence public discourse.

Strategic Situation/Scenario Analysis

• Provide clear, evidence-based documentation of emerging / changing policy positions and their impact on Regulatory Services operations, to support the Policy, Strategy and Initiatives Director in setting out the strategic choices and options available that enable RS to maximise its strengths to capitalize on the opportunities, whilst minimising its weaknesses to avoid the threats.

Innovation Opportunities

• Identify suitable business development opportunities for BSI which align with the Regulatory Services and wider-BSI strategy. Work with other colleagues in Regulatory Services Policy, Strategy and Initiatives team to develop and build new opportunities.

Strategy Implementation & Delivery

• Building and maintaining global relationships with those organisations listed above, positively influencing these stakeholders to ensure that BSI’s business objectives are supported.

• Represent BSI in international fora, negotiating and promoting the BSI Regulatory Services view in advance of, and during, meetings and events.

Organisation & Transformation

• Work across BSI with relevant policy teams to ensure that coordinated and well-articulated discussions are had with government bodies, including regulators.

• Work with relevant Heads of Notified Body/Approved Body and their Regulatory Leads to ensure coordinated messaging.

• Develop and support team to serve as subject matter experts on policy issues, participating in conferences, workshops, and public forums to ensure knowledge is up to date, sharing insights externally and internally.

• Developing reporting system to ensure key internal stakeholders are familiar with the ongoing work.

• Development of appropriate KPIs to assess success of the engagement strategy and team’s performance.

To be successful in this role, you will have:

• At least 3 years in a policy role, preferably in a government or regulatory body. Experience of engaging with policy makers and influencers.

• Strong understanding of how governments create, develop and implement policy decisions. Knowledge of policy and regulatory issues in a Regulatory Services sector and navigating complex regulatory environments.

• The ability to work as a member of a diverse high performing team, including by collaborating, being transparent and taking initiative.

• Excellent communication skills, and experience in stakeholder engagement, advocacy, and coalition building, and presenting to senior teams and external partners.
