Job description

Job Summary:

We are seeking a knowledgeable and engaging Inpatient Coding & Clinical Documentation Improvement (CDI) Trainer to support the development and performance of coding and documentation staff. This role is responsible for designing and delivering training programs on inpatient coding best practices, clinical documentation standards, and regulatory compliance. The ideal candidate has a strong background in inpatient coding, a passion for education, and the ability to adapt training approaches to diverse learner needs.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop and facilitate training programs on ICD-10-CM, ICD-10-PCS, DRG assignment, documentation improvement, and compliance requirements.
  • Conduct onboarding sessions for new inpatient coders and refresher training for existing staff.
  • Collaborate with QA and Operations teams to identify training needs based on audit trends, updates, and performance data.
  • Translate clinical documentation requirements into practical, coder-friendly guidance to support accurate and complete code assignment.
  • Monitor learner progress and provide feedback through assessments, coaching sessions, and follow-up training.
  • Stay updated on the latest coding guidelines, CDI practices, payer expectations, and industry trends.
  • Assist in the development of internal training materials, coding tip sheets, and documentation guides.

Qualifications:

  • Associates or Bachelors degree in Health Information Management, Nursing, or a related field preferred.
  • Active CCS (Certified Coding Specialist), CDI certification (e.g., CCDS or CDIP), or equivalent credential required.
  • Minimum 3-5 years of inpatient coding experience, with prior training, mentoring, or CDI involvement.
  • Strong understanding of MS-DRG/APR-DRG systems, official coding guidelines, and CDI principles.
  • Proficient with EMR systems, encoder software (e.g., 3M, Optum), and training platforms.
  • Familiarity with HIPAA regulations and coding compliance standards.

Preferred Skills:

  • Prior experience conducting virtual and/or in-person training sessions.
  • Ability to communicate technical content clearly to both novice and experienced coders.
  • Strong presentation, coaching, and documentation development skills.
  • Experience working across varied hospital or provider documentation systems is a plus.
