Laboratory Supervisor and NDT Technician
 

Oversee the day-to-day operation of the laboratory under the supervision of the Laboratory Manager and provide on-site support for the Australian NDT team.

The Laboratory Supervisor & NDT Technician ensures the efficient and compliant operation of laboratory and testing services by delivering technical and hands on expertise across mechanical testing and NDT activities. This role drives continuous improvement of laboratory processes, equipment, and safety systems, ensuring high-quality and commercially viable service delivery aligned with organizational and regulatory standards. By carrying out testing operations, supporting site-based NDT work, and enabling effective communication and resource coordination, the role strengthens performance, safety, and operational efficiency across laboratory and field environments. 

 

As a laboratory Supervisor and NDT Technician you will have the following responsibilities:  

Laboratory Supervisor: 

Strategic Planning 

  • Collaborate with Lab Manager to regularly review facilities to requirements based on strategic direction of the company 

  • Collaborate with Lab Manager to regularly review the laboratory facility to ensure capability and equipment meet the requirements of the users and on-going profitability of the work areas. 

  • Collaborate with the Lab Manager, Work Area supervisors and users, development of the work areas to meet the current and future requirements of the users including development of business case for investment in the work areas as required. 

Communication 

  • Proactively engages with all users of the work areas to understand their current and future requirements for the work areas. 

  • Discusses any non-standard test procedures and hazardous work planned for the work area with the project manager and the work area supervisor prior to the commencement of the work. 

  • Notifies users and Quest Integrity staff in general of any non-standard and / or hazardous work taking place or restrictions on entry for a work area 

Mechanical Testing 

  • To undertake mechanical testing of prepared test pieces for: 

  • Creep 

  • Tensile testing / Compression testing 

  • Impact testing (Charpy and IZOD) 

  • Hardness testing (Rockwell, Brinell and Vickers) 

  • Other testing as required 

Test piece manufacture 

  • Liaise with machine shop service supplier in the generation of test specimens. 

Testing services/facility 

  • Ensure operators are trained to use the equipment and understand the hazards and risks associated with operation. 

  • Manage equipment usage by engineers. 

  • Manage mechanical test jobs, including proposal writing, pricing, execution, and reporting. 

Laboratory 

  • Laboratory Supervisor for laboratory as defined in the Quest Integrity Laboratory Handbook. 

  • In conjunction with the users and work area supervisor(s), co-ordinate and/or schedule projects which require space and equipment for extended periods in the laboratory facilities. 

  • Review and recommend process improvements in our management and handling of client samples and laboratory services. 

  • Ensure test equipment is maintained according to necessary national and manufacture specifications. 

  • Train others in the use of the laboratory equipment. 

Test Equipment Calibration 

  • Ensure calibration of all test equipment and associated devices are maintained to the business best practice standards. 

Records 

  • Review of processes and procedures to ensure procedures meet current regulatory, technical and quality standards. 

  • Ensure the equipment register is maintained. 

 

NDT Technician: 

Site Work 

  • Assist Australian NDT team on site where required. Notably, it is understood that the NDT team will require support for Stanwell (4-week duration) and Tarong (4-week duration) Shutdowns in Queensland Australia. 

  • Ensure all hazards and risks associated with site work are understood, appropriate PPE is worn and required HSSE documentation is completed. 

  • Comply with any reasonable requests on site relating to health and Safety of yourself and others. 

Health and Safety 

  • Assist users and work area supervisors with development of hazard assessments for all activities scheduled to be carried out in the work area. 

  • Ensure all equipment in the work area complies with HSSE regulations. 

  • Ensure all safety equipment and first aid equipment is maintained and in working order and the first aid kits are fully supplied. 

  • Ensure the work areas comply with regulatory standards (e.g. lighting, air conditioning, etc.). 

  • Identify and arrange maintenance for any repairs required for mechanical test environment (e.g. air conditioning, lighting). 

 

To be successful in this role you will have: 

  • Experience relevant to Mechanical Testing in a commercial environment. 

  • Understanding of the critical factors for delivering quality technical services to clients. 

  • Creep, tensile, impact, hardness testing and machining experience. Additional training will be provided for the right candidate. 

  • Microsoft Excel and Microsoft Word at sufficient level to operate and maintain the data logging facility. Additional training will be provided for the right candidate. 

  • Ability to work independently to deliver quality results within multidisciplinary teams. 

  • Ability to interact confidently with our clients, staff and external organisations. 

  • Teamwork – ability to work as a team member providing support to all staff. 

  • Accuracy and attention to detail. 

  • Ability to interact in a professional manner with all levels of staff and clients. 

  • Ability to work with minimum supervision, displaying initiative and self-sufficiency. This should be balanced with ability to ask questions when needed to clarify requirements. 

  • Ability to travel internationally. 

  • Ability to perform tasks to deadline and within tight timeframes when required.
