The Senior Engineer is a highly capable individual contributor who leads the technical delivery of significant features and projects within their team. This role applies deep expertise to solve complex technical problems, sets the technical standard through exemplary code and thorough review, and actively develops Engineer I, II, and III teammates. The Senior Engineer collaborates cross-functionally to shape work for technical feasibility and quality and is a trusted technical voice within and across teams. This role remains strongly hands-on with code while providing technical leadership that elevates the entire team.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND BASIC DUTIES:
Technical Execution & Excellence - 70%
- Design and implement complex, high-impact features and system improvements
- Own end-to-end delivery of significant features and projects from design through production
- Write production-quality code for business-critical systems that serve as a standard for the team
- Debug complex issues spanning multiple systems, services, and integrations
- Lead technical design and code reviews for the team, establishing and maintaining technical standards
- Drive improvements to code quality, test coverage, reliability, and observability across the team
- Identify and address technical debt and architectural issues proactively
- Make sound, pragmatic technical decisions within the team's domain; contribute to broader architectural discussions
- Balance delivery velocity with technical quality and long-term maintainability
- Contribute to incident response for production issues; lead root cause analysis within their domain
- Contribute to technical documentation, architecture decision records, and runbooks
Team Collaboration & Influence - 20%
- Collaborate with Product Management to shape feature requirements for technical feasibility and user value
- Represent the team in cross-team technical discussions, planning, and architecture reviews
- Partner with Platform and Quality Engineering teams on infrastructure, tooling, and quality initiatives
- Participate in hiring through technical interviews and helping calibrate the hiring bar
- Communicate technical complexity and tradeoffs clearly to non-technical stakeholders
- Contribute to team technical roadmap and capacity planning
- Share knowledge through design documents, tech talks, and cross-team discussions
- Help prioritize technical work alongside feature delivery
Technical Leadership & Mentorship - 10%
- Mentor Engineer I, II, and III teammates through pairing, code review, and direct coaching
- Define and uphold technical standards and engineering best practices within the team
- Support onboarding and ramp-up of new team members
- Identify growth opportunities and stretch assignments for junior engineers
Contribute to engineering culture through knowledge sharing and leading by example
SECONDARY FUNCTIONS (IF APPLICABLE)
- May work on special projects or other duties as assigned
- Research and develop necessary skills to support organizational objectives
SUPERVISORY/BUDGETARY/EXTERNAL COMMUNICATION RESPONSIBILITY
- No formal direct reports; provides technical mentorship and guidance to junior engineers
- Communicates with cross-functional partners, external vendors, and service providers as needed
- Aware of team budget implications for technical decisions
QUALIFICATIONS – EDUCATION, WORK EXPERIENCE, CERTIFICATIONS:
- Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, related technical field, or equivalent practical experience, required
- 6-8+ years of professional software engineering experience with a strong track record of independent delivery
- Proven experience designing and delivering complex distributed systems, data solutions, or cloud infrastructure at production scale
- Demonstrated experience mentoring engineers and raising team technical standards
- Experience in healthcare, fintech, or other regulated industries (HIPAA, SOC2) preferred
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

- Deep expertise in a primary engineering discipline (e.g. application development, data engineering, or cloud/infrastructure engineering)
- Broad familiarity with cloud platform concepts, security fundamentals, and software delivery tooling
- Deep understanding of modern software delivery practices (CI/CD, observability, testing strategies, agile/Kanban)
- Working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and Teams
- Deep expertise in a primary engineering discipline and its associated languages, frameworks, and tools
- Experience with production systems across multiple areas - application services, data pipelines, APIs, cloud infrastructure, or similar depending on discipline
- Strong system design skills - can design reliable, maintainable systems considering scalability, security, and operational tradeoffs
- Track record of independently delivering high-impact features and projects from concept to production
- Strong code review skills; sets technical standards through exemplary code and thorough review
- Demonstrated ability to mentor engineers at multiple levels with measurable growth
- Deep understanding of CI/CD, testing strategies, observability, and engineering operational excellence
- Broad familiarity with cloud platform concepts and modern infrastructure practices
- Ability to diagnose and resolve complex cross-system production issues under pressure
- Excellent technical communication - can articulate complex tradeoffs in design docs, code review, and stakeholder discussions
