Financial Counsellor  

Permanent Full-Time | SCHADS Level 4–5 (subject to accreditation)  

Based in South Australia  1 day WFH with flexibility  

  • Provide inbound financial counselling via the National Debt Helpline

This role supports people experiencing financial hardship through inbound National Debt Helpline calls and online chat, providing timely, practical and compassionate financial counselling.

This role supports people experiencing financial hardship by providing timely, compassionate and practical assistance through the National Debt Helpline (NDH). You will help community members understand their options, reduce financial stress, and build longterm capability and resilience. Your work directly contributes to The Salvation Army’s mission to care for people, build healthy communities and work for justice. 

About the role 

The Financial Counsellor provides inbound phone and online chat support through the National Debt Helpline on a rostered basis. You will deliver highquality financial counselling, casework and advocacy to people seeking immediate guidance or longerterm support. 

This permanent full-time position is based in South Australia, within the Moneycare team, reporting to the Team Leader. Pay is in accordance with a SCHADS Level 4–5, subject to accreditation. 

How you will make an impact 

  • Providing financial counselling through inbound NDH calls, online chat and in person appointments offering clear, practical and empathetic support 

  • Undertaking holistic assessments to understand each person’s circumstances, needs and goals 

  • Developing collaborative case plans that build financial capability, resilience and wellbeing 

  • Advocating for community members with creditors, service providers and external agencies 

  • Supporting access to services and strengthening community connections 

  • Maintaining accurate records in SAMIS and meeting all reporting requirements 

  • Identifying risks and service gaps and escalating appropriately 

  • Participating in professional development and reflective practice 

  • Contributing to financial capability education where appropriate 

What you will bring 

  • Minimum Diploma of Financial Counselling 

  • Eligibility for SCHADS Level 4 (working toward accreditation) or Level 5 (accredited) 

  • Experience in social services, community engagement or financial hardship support 

  • Understanding of the drivers of financial hardship and financial exclusion 

  • Strong communication skills across phone, online chat and facetoface settings 

  • Ability to work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team 

  • Commitment to diversity, inclusion and culturally safe practice 

  • Resilience, professionalism and a communitymembercentred approach 

  • Current SA Employee Working with Children Check
