Position Overview: BLN24 is seeking a Content Specialist to serve as the primary biomedical science writer and public-facing communications lead in support of DHA Strategic Communications at Fort Detrick, MD.
This role translates complex scientific and technical information into clear, audience-appropriate messaging while supporting Public Affairs operations. The specialist will develop written materials, manage media and public inquiries, coordinate outreach efforts, and enhance awareness of organizational initiatives across multiple communication channels.
The ideal candidate brings strong editorial judgment, federal Public Affairs experience, and the ability to simplify complex information for public consumption.
Key Responsibilities: Content Development & Editorial Support
Draft, edit, and publish high-quality written materials including press releases, feature articles, publications, and digital content
Translate complex biomedical and technical information into clear, concise language appropriate for diverse audiences
Ensure all content adheres to AP Style, DoD/DHA guidance, and Public Affairs regulations
Collaborate with subject matter experts and program stakeholders to ensure messaging accuracy and clarity
Media Relations & Public Engagement
Manage the Public Affairs Office (PAO) inbox and track incoming inquiries
Provide timely, accurate written responses within three (3) business days
Research and maintain a database of relevant media outlets and journalists
Draft statements, talking points, and background materials for media inquiries
Support proactive media engagement strategies to increase visibility of organizational priorities
Outreach & Communications Coordination
Develop and maintain speaker resources including briefing materials, talking points, and presentation content
Coordinate outreach events in alignment with communication objectives and Public Affairs guidance
Collaborate with internal teams to ensure consistent messaging across engagements
Reporting & Communication Products
Prepare the bi-monthly News Media Rollup Report summarizing media coverage and trends
Contribute content to PAO Command and Staff briefing materials
Track and report media engagement metrics and communication outcomes
Required Qualifications:
Bachelor’s Degree in Communications, Public Relations, Journalism, English, or related field
Minimum 4+ years of professional experience in communications, public relations, or related field
Experience supporting DoD, DHA, or federal Public Affairs environments
Demonstrated experience writing and editing for public audiences, including press releases and media-facing materials
Strong understanding and application of AP Style
Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to simplify complex technical information
U.S. Citizenship required with the ability to obtain and maintain a Federal Public Trust clearance
Preferred Qualifications:
Familiarity with biomedical, scientific, or healthcare communications
Experience managing media inquiries and coordinating with journalists
Experience supporting executive communications and senior leader briefings
