Requirements:

  • Oversee HR and compliance activities including hiring, onboarding, payroll coordination, state reporting, performance evaluations, coaching, and development of organizers; establish systems for organizer evaluation and accountability.
  • Manage field operations logistics such as office setup, field materials tracking and ordering, and coordinating with the field team to identify material needs.
  • Support day-to-day program operations in collaboration with leadership, including research, candidate tracking, and state-of-the-race updates.
  • Coordinate across departments to ensure timely deliverables across time zones, with availability for evenings and weekends as needed (GOTV phases).

Position Title: democracyFIRST HR and Field Operations Deputy Director

Location: Remote

Salary: Biweekly, $3,780 - $4,090

Preferred Start Date: June 15, 2026

End Date: November 13, 2026

Position Summary:

democracyFIRST is seeking an experienced Deputy Director for the 2026 cycle to assist with HR, compliance, and field operations. The role will support a multi-state program to elect pro-democracy candidates for down ballot races that play a critical role in protecting the administration of our elections for the future. This position reports directly to the National Field Director, while also working closely with the HR and Business Operations team. This is a full-time, remote position. Given placement of staff across time zones, the hours of work are expected to be 11:00am - 7:00pm ET hours with night and weekend availability as the cycle demands.

This position is eligible for benefits, including employer-sponsored health, dental, and vision insurance, paid time off, and paid holidays.

Responsibilities:

HR & Compliance:

  • Support hiring process, including reviewing payroll forms and completing initial onboarding meetings
  • Coordinate and confirm pay details, and track compliance details for budget purposes
  • Assist with state reporting requirements as needed
  • Assist in conducting regular check-ins, performance evaluations, and coaching conversations for Regional Organizing Directors and field organizers
  • Support hiring, onboarding, training, and professional development of organizing staff
  • Help develop systems for organizer evaluation and accountability

Field Operations:

  • In coordination with the Executive Director and National Field Director, manage operations duties including but not limited to: office location identification and set up, field materials tracking and ordering, interfacing with field team to identify materials needs.
  • Assist Executive Director in day to day operations of program including but not limited to research, candidate tracking, and state of the race updates.

Qualifications (You will be a good fit if):

  • At least 2 cycles of leading operations in a campaign environment
  • Familiarity with campaign management, preferably with a field focus
  • Ability to manage several tasks and projects concurrently and to prioritize work effectively
  • Experience working across departments to develop solutions
  • Working knowledge of Google Workspace (Gmail, Calendar, Docs, Sheets, Drive)
  • Experience in hiring, onboarding/offboarding, and coordinating payroll details
  • Ability to meet tight deadlines under pressure.
  • Available to work weekends and evenings during initial phases; weekends and evening work will be required during GOTV phase
