Roles & Responsibilities

  • Completion of an accredited Nurse Practitioner program or Physician Assistant program.
  • Current Georgia licensure as an advanced practice nurse (Georgia Board of Nursing) with ANCC NP certification or equivalent, or certification as a Physician's Assistant by NCCPA.
  • BLS, ACLS, and Healthcare Provider certifications required.
  • Two years of clinical research experience (preferred).

Requirements:

  • Direct the clinical course of research participants in clinical trials, ensure participant safety, and manage clinical research protocols and procedures; conduct interviews and document participant histories, health status, and medical problems.
  • Assist in evaluation and follow-up for safety and efficacy; perform chart abstractions and determine eligibility of potential study participants.
  • Under physician direction, perform physical examinations, specialized research procedures, and clinical assessments in outpatient and inpatient settings; review lab results and order additional tests as needed; monitor adverse events.
  • Maintain and update accurate research participant records, prepare reports and analyses, contribute to manuscript reviews, train team members, and participate in committees and professional activities; ensure compliance with regulatory requirements.

Description:

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Research Nurse Practitioner (NP) or Physician Assistant (PA) routinely applies medical knowledge and experience to direct the clinical course of research participants in clinical trials, assures study participant safety, and manages clinical research protocols and procedures.
  • Assists in the evaluation and follow up for safety and efficacy of participants.
  • Conducts research participant interviews and documents research participant histories, psychosocial histories, health status and medical problems or potential problems.
  • Performs chart abstractions and determines eligibility of potential study participants.
  • Under the direction of a physician, performs physical examinations, specialized research procedures and clinical assessments of participants in outpatient and inpatient settings according to specified study protocols.
  • Reviews lab test results and takes action as needed to obtain additional test results, notifies study and safety monitors, and provides written documentation to relevant supervising safety agencies.
  • Maintains and updates current, accurate research participant records including medical assessment, interventions, and evaluations.
  • Orders, schedules and/or performs laboratory tests and diagnostic procedures.
  • Collects and interprets diagnostic data to implement appropriate research participant plans.
  • Assesses intensity and relationships of adverse events related to study products and/or devices.
  • Conducts illness visits with research participants to educate and communicate the necessity, preparation, nature and anticipated effects of procedures and study products.
  • Assists principal investigator in overall implementation and conduct of the study.
  • May act as sub-investigator on clinical research studies.
  • Attends educational in-services as appropriate.
  • Participates in professional activities and organizations to maintain knowledge of current trends, practices, and developments in medicine and research.
  • Prepares reports and analyses of research projects and investigational protocols; reports on progress, adverse trends and appropriate conclusions and recommendations.
  • Contributes to manuscript reviews.
  • Trains and teaches other research team members in techniques and procedures unique to specific setting.
  • Actively participates in organizational and operational research committees and networks.
  • Performs related responsibilities as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Completion of an accredited Nurse Practitioner program or Physician Assistant program.
  • Currently licensed as an advanced practice nurse in the state of Georgia by the Georgia Board of Nursing and certified as a Nurse Practitioner by the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) or equivalent body or Certified as a Physician's Assistant by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA).
  • Licensed as appropriate in the state of Georgia.
  • BLS, ACLS, and Healthcare Provider certifications required.
  • Prefer two years clinical research experience.

NOTE: Position tasks are generally required to be performed in-person at an Emory University location.  Remote work from home day options may be granted at department discretion. Emory reserves the right to change remote work status with notice to employee.
