About the Role

Under the direction of the National Vice President, Child & Club Safety, the Director, Child & Club Safety, primarily provides real-time, consultative support to organizational leaders (e.g., CEOs, Boards) during critical incidents impacting youth safety and well-being. The individual does not simply escalate issues, but actively guides leaders through structured, thoughtful response, ensuring appropriate actions, coordination of experts, and resolution. You will also  provides guidance to field facing staff in their efforts to support local safety needs.

This role is critical to ensuring the safety and well-being of youth and staff across all Boys & Girls Clubs. By providing leadership, training, and guidance, the Director helps create safe, consistent environments nationwide while equipping local Clubs and field teams with the tools and support needed to effectively uphold safety standards.

Responsibilities:

What You’ll Do

Training, Resources, and Consultation 

  • Develop and promote self-help resources for local Clubs such as policies, procedures, checklists, newsletters and training materials for leadership, management and youth development professionals.  
  • Develop and deliver safety-related training modules via distance learning and traditional group trainings at local Clubs, conferences and state events.  
  • Conduct webinars and workshops on best practices and strategies related to child protection.  
  • Provide direct technical assistance to local Clubs via on site assessments, emails and telephone. 
  • Identify potential risks/issues at local Clubs and proactively address through online and face-to-face training. 
  • Advise local organizations on risk management, loss prevention, and insurance practices. 
  • Advise local organizations on safety and security measures, to include premise security, vehicular safety, and internet safety. 
  • Provide training, consultation and recommendations regarding background checks, incident management systems and other related systems. 

 Advocacy  

  • Represent and present at outside events to position BGCA as an authority on child safety issues as requested by the National Vice President, Child & Club Safety. 
  • Maintain the Movement’s advocacy platform relating to Child and Club Safety.  
  • Support the planning and implementation of a bi-annual Child & Club Safety Symposium and the bi-annual market specific symposium. 
  • Develop, implement and regularly review/update all BGCA policies related to safety as requested by the National Vice President, Child & Club Safety. 

 Compliance 

  • Provide face-to-face, verbal and written technical assistance to help ensure local Clubs comply with federal, state or local regulations, such as: The Americans with Disabilities Act, life-safety, health or child care. 
  • Provide face-to-face, verbal and written technical assistance and coordinate with other departments to ensure the compliance of local Clubs with BGCA membership requirements such as: background checks and certificates of insurance. 
  • Strongly influence Clubs to implement best practices in child protection.   

 Negotiations and Partnerships 

  • Review and recommend best price for common vendors for background checks, insurance providers, incident management systems, external safety hotlines, internet safety, external safety training programs, etc. 
  • Benchmark with local Clubs, other youth serving organizations and government agencies to identify best practices and standards that inform BGCA’s overall child safety model. 
  • Support the integration of child protection/safety practices with all Field Services work, collaborating closely with regional service directors and educating the Field Services team.   
  • Upon request, develop regular safety-related communiqués, as needed, for distribution through Field Services, and to all organizations through e-blasts 

 Monitoring, Reporting, Analysis and Follow-Up 

  • Monitor the incident management system, analyze results and recommend actions to local Clubs and BGCA staff who are responsible for bringing about resolution.     
  • Review insurance data to identify norms, trends, and outliers and design strategies to address any identified needs/issues. 
  • Develop internal monitoring tools and provide reports. 
  • As appropriate, enforce safety practices in local organizations. 
  • Track and evaluate best practices and standards of care utilized by local Clubs, other youth serving organizations and government agencies

ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES 

  • Manage the department’s web presence and content on both BGCA.net and BGCA.org. 
  • Manage, coordinate or otherwise ensure the completion of projects or grants that address child and Club safety issues. 
  • Demonstrate BGCA mission driven values of integrity, excellence and inclusion and integrate into work environment and ways of work.

Qualifications:

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • Bachelor’s degree in youth development, safety management/protection or similar discipline. 
  • Minimum of 5 years of related professional experience.

SKILLS

  • Excellent written, verbal and interpersonal communication skills.  Strong presentation skills with the ability to provide effective training programs and safety related resources.  Ability to negotiate with vendors for Movement-wide resources.
  • Demonstrated high standards of ethics and integrity. Ability to develop partnerships with related agencies.  
  • Excellent skills in monitoring, follow-up, and great attention to detail.  Ability to collect, analyze data, and make decisions based on information.  
  • Demonstrates passion for child safety issues.  Ability to be flexible and handle multiple tasks and projects at same time; adjust priorities based on need.  
  • Ability to work interdepartmentally to get results.  Ability to influence others to make needed changes without having authority to mandate change. Ability to think conceptually and develop innovative solutions.  
  • Possess expert knowledge of risk management and control, premises liability, security, property hazards, sports and aquatic safety, emergency response planning/procedures, vehicular safety, bullying, and child abuse.  Ability to effectively use technology while traveling. 

ABILITIES 

  • Physical requirements include sight, hearing, sitting for four plus hours per day. High energy level, comfortable performing multi-faceted projects in conjunction with day-to-day activities.  
  • Ability to get along with diverse personalities, at all times displaying tact, maturity and flexibility. 
  • Must have good reasoning abilities and sound judgment; skills essential for successful communications include speaking and writing. 

Travel Expectations

  • Travel estimated at 30-40% (can be 6 to 12 days or more in a month – including weekends – depending on scheduling requirements)

COMPENSATION

The salary range for this role is $105,000.00 to $120,000.00. BGCA takes into consideration a combination of a candidate’s education, training and experience, as well as the position’s scope and complexity, the discretion and latitude required for the role and other external and internal data when establishing a salary level.
