Roles & Responsibilities

  • Minimum 5 years in Clinical Application, Marketing, Sales, or a related role in a reputable medical device company, specifically in Ophthalmology/Optometry fields
  • Experience as Surgical/Medical Technologist, Biomedical Engineer, Ophthalmic Assistant, or Optometrist is beneficial
  • English language proficiency (written and spoken)
  • Valid driver's license and passport with willingness to travel extensively (approximately 40% across Africa and South Africa)

Requirements:

  • Train surgeons in the transition from ECCE/MSICS to Phaco, providing OR, clinic, hospital, and wet-lab training to enhance surgical skills and technique adoption
  • Serve as a clinical and technical consultant for surgeons and hospital staff, ensuring correct application of Alcon ophthalmic devices and technologies; collaborate with external consultants, course instructors, and proctors to drive skill development and high-quality outcomes
  • Assist in delivering Phaco Development Program courses, professional congresses, symposiums, and special events; support education initiatives to enhance understanding of cataract surgery options
  • Maintain compliance and documentation, including pre-course assessments, surgical observations, and post-course performance tracking; handle adverse event and product complaint reporting at a local level with timely escalation to Local Vigilance Representative

As a Phaco Development Specialist, you will play a vital role in training and supporting ophthalmic surgeons and hospital staff as they transition from Manual Small Incision Cataract Surgery (MSICS) and Extracapsular Cataract Extraction (ECCE) to Phacoemulsification (Phaco) as the preferred cataract treatment.

A typical day in this role will include:

Surgeon Development & Training:

  • Support the successful transition of cataract surgeons from ECCE/MSICS to
    Phaco surgery.
  • Provide Operating Room, Clinic, Hospital and Wet Lab training to enhance
    surgical skills, improve outcomes and ensure proper technique adoption.
  • Assist in identifying and selecting candidates for the Phaco Development
    Program through structured self-assessments

Surgical & Technical Support:

  • Serve as a trusted clinical and technical consultant for surgeons and hospital
    staff, ensuring the correct application of Alcon's ophthalmic devices and
    technologies.
  • Collaborate with external consultants, course instructors, and proctors to drive
    effective skill development and high-quality surgical outcomes.
  • Demonstrate product and procedural excellence in OR, hospital, and wet lab
    settings.

Program & Event Support:

  • Assist in delivering Alcon Phaco Development Program courses, professional
    congresses, symposiums, and special events.
  • Support education initiatives to enhance understanding of cataract surgery
    options.

Compliance & Reporting:

  • Ensure adherence to corporate compliance guidelines and reporting
    procedures.
  • Maintain thorough documentation, including pre-course assessments, surgical
    observations, and post-course performance tracking.
  • Handle adverse event and product complaint reporting at a local level,
    ensuring timely escalation to the Local Vigilance Representative.

WE ARE SEEKING:

  • Education/Background: Experience as a Surgical/Medical Technologist, Biomedical Engineer, Ophthalmic Assistant, or Optometrist is beneficial
  • Experience: Minimum 5 years in Clinical Application, Marketing, Sales, or a related role in a reputable medical device company, specifically in the Ophthalmology / Optometry fields
  • Language: English
  • Strong self-motivation, teamwork, problem-solving, organizational skills, and ability to work under pressure
  • Valid driver’s license and passport and willing to travel extensively 40% (Africa + South Africa)
