The Impact You’ll Make in this Role
As the Director and Assistant General Counsel of Enterprise Risk Management, Environmental Compliance, you will be responsible for representing and advising the company in complex environmental regulatory and enforcement matters, regulatory litigation and government rulemaking processes and administrative law. You will be joining a fast-paced, cross-functional team of other lawyers and legal professionals working jointly to manage risk for 3M. Here, you will make an impact by:
- Strategically managing complex environmental compliance and regulatory enforcement issues globally, including by retaining and supervising outside counsel and consultants, carefully managing budgets and coordinating with internal stakeholders.
- Representing and advising the Company in its engagement with regulators on a range of environmental issues, including regulatory submissions and permitting.
- Partnering with other 3M counsel and Government Affairs and Communications colleagues to mitigate risk through internal and external advocacy, including through strategic participation in rulemaking and legislative processes.
- Coordinating with members of the ERM Litigation team on environmental litigation matters.
- Providing legal advice to 3M on potential environmental regulatory changes and regulatory trends.
- Proactively partnering with and advising 3M businesses, Legal Affairs colleagues and other subject matter experts regarding environmental compliance and global regulatory risk.
- Contributing to the efficiency and effectiveness of the global ERM and broader Legal Affairs teams
Your Skills and Expertise
To set you up for success in this role from day one, 3M requires (at a minimum) the following qualifications:
- Juris Doctor degree (completed and verified prior to start) from an accredited law school
- Ten (10) years of environmental law practice in a private, public, government or military environment
Additional qualifications that could help you succeed even further in this role include:
- Experience serving as in-house counsel handling environmental matters, including regulatory compliance counseling and regulatory enforcement defense, or experience serving as an attorney for an environmental regulatory or enforcement agency.
- Experience providing legal support for regulatory advocacy initiatives, including participation in notice and comment opportunities and rulemaking challenges.
- Experience engaging with federal and state regulators on environmental matters.
- Experience engaging with environmental regulators and enforcement agencies globally.
- Experience with administrative law and procedure, including experience preparing for and participating in administrative hearings and permitting processes.
- Experience managing or coordinating large, cross-functional teams.
- Highly effective written and verbal communication skills, with an ability to communicate at all levels of the organization, including business leaders, department leaders, and director-level management
- Long-term, strategic and practical thinker
- Self-starter with the ability to triage and manage time-sensitive matters simultaneously and effectively
- Excellent interpersonal skills; ability to collaborate transparently, efficiently and effectively at all levels within a team environment
- Honesty and unwavering integrity
- Sense of humor, curiosity and a drive for continuous improvement
- Currently admitted to practice law in relevant jurisdictions or eligible to become so within six months
Remote - This position has the possibility for remote work for candidates located more than 50-miles from to 3M Global Headquarters in Maplewood, MN. For candidates located within a commutable distance to Maplewood, MN, this role follows an on-site working model, requiring the employee to work at least four days a week at the 3M Center in Maplewood, MN.
Must be legally authorized to work in country of employment without sponsorship for employment visa status (e.g., H1B status).

Applicable to US Applicants Only:The expected compensation range for this position is $250,253 - $305,864, which includes base pay plus variable incentive pay, if eligible. This range represents a good faith estimate for this position. The specific compensation offered to a candidate may vary based on factors including, but not limited to, the candidate’s relevant knowledge, training, skills, work location, and/or experience.
