  • Experience editing technical documents related to traffic safety, pedestrian safety, or transportation research.
  • Familiarity with plain language standards, APA style formatting, and Section 508 accessibility requirements for federal documents.
  • Experience collaborating with writers, researchers, and subject matter experts in a government or public safety environment.

Requirements:

  • Serve as the final quality checkpoint for all deliverables, reviewing summit reports, the draft final report, and the final report for clarity, accuracy, and readiness.
  • Identify and correct grammatical errors, inconsistencies, and formatting issues to ensure every document meets a high standard of quality.
  • Apply plain language standards and NHTSA formatting guidelines consistently across all documents to maintain a unified, professional voice.
  • Collaborate with the Technical Writer and project team throughout the review cycle, providing clear and constructive feedback that strengthens each deliverable before submission to NHTSA.

Job description

Overview:

FWI is building a team to plan, coordinate, and host ten regional pedestrian safety summits across all NHTSA regions nationwide. As a Technical Editor, you will evaluate, revise, and proofread all project deliverables to ensure content is accurate, error-free, and appropriate for the intended audience.

Work Schedule and Location:

Remote: This part-time remote position requires approximately 3 hours per week, with a flexible schedule coordinated around project milestones, monthly reporting deadlines, and deliverable timelines.

Responsibilities:
  • Serve as the final quality checkpoint for all deliverables, reviewing summit reports, the draft final report, and the final report for clarity, accuracy, and readiness
  • Identify and correct grammatical errors, inconsistencies, and formatting issues to ensure every document meets a high standard of quality
  • Evaluate the overall structure and flow of written materials, confirming that information is presented in a logical and reader-friendly sequence
  • Assess whether methods, techniques, and findings described in deliverables are presented accurately and completely
  • Verify that all citations, references, and source materials are correct and properly formatted
  • Apply plain language standards and NHTSA formatting guidelines consistently across all documents to maintain a unified, professional voice
  • Support Section 508 accessibility compliance for electronic documents when identified by NHTSA as required
  • Collaborate with the Technical Writer and project team throughout the review cycle, providing clear and constructive feedback that strengthens each deliverable before submission to NHTSA
  • Ensure all documents follow required style formatting, including proper use of APA style where applicable

 

Qualifications:

Required: 

  • Bachelor's degree and at least 1 year of relevant experience.  
  • Education/Experience Substitution: PhD and 0 years experience; Master's and 0 years experience; Associate's and 3 years experience; High School and 5 years experience

Desired:

  • Experience editing technical documents related to traffic safety, pedestrian safety, or transportation research
  • Background in reviewing research reports, evaluation findings, and data-driven publications for accuracy and clarity
  • Familiarity with plain language standards, APA style formatting, and Section 508 accessibility requirements for federal documents
  • Experience working with writers, researchers, and subject matter experts in a government or public safety environment
  • Knowledge of pedestrian safety issues, vulnerable road user programs, or transportation safety countermeasures
  • Previous experience supporting a similar Government agency or large-scale corporate environment
