  • Certified Professional Coder (CPC), Certified Outpatient Coder (COC) or CCS certification.
  • RHIA or RHIT certification accepted.
  • Minimum 4 years of experience coding complex inpatient and/or outpatient cases in an acute care setting; ED charging experience strongly preferred.

Requirements:

  • Coordinate staff development with HIM Leadership to ensure ethical reimbursement and coding practices in compliance with guidelines.
  • Perform internal coding assessments, random and pre-bill quality assurance reviews, and provide coder and physician education as needed.
  • Serve as liaison with external auditors for corporate audits and provide orientation to coding systems and software required for coding.
  • Develop internal coding assessment plans (including coder assessments and follow-ups with coders, management and physicians), identify new problem areas and education opportunities, and act as a coding resource for the team; support ICD-10 and CPT education; demonstrate competence in APCs and/or MS-DRGs.

This position is Part time- day shift and Fully remote position

Responsible for coordinating staff development in collaboration with HIM Leadership to assure optimal, ethical reimbursement for Sentara's patients; and that coding practices fall within established compliance guidelines. Performs a number of functions including, but not limited to internal coding assessments, random and pre-bill quality assurance reviews, provides coder and physician education, and coding as needed. Will serve as a liaison with external auditors for corporate audits, as needed. Provides orientation to systems and software required for coding. Develops internal coding assessment plan(s), which includes coder assessments, follow-up to coders, management and physicians. Identifies new problem areas, trends, educations opportunities and advise Coding Leadership. This role also serves as a coding resource for team members by providing feedback to coding question. Both ICD-10 and CPT coding methodologies are utilized in the internal education activity. The Coding Quality Education Specialist must exhibit competence in APCs and/or MS-DRGs

Education

  • Associates Degree preferred.

Certification/Licensure

  • Certified Professional Coder (CPC), Certified Outpatient Coder (COC) or CCS is required for outpatient auditors.
  • Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA) - Certification or Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT) - Certification accepted.

Experience

  • Minimum 4 years experience coding complex inpatient and/or outpatient cases in an acute care setting.
  • ED charging experience is strongly preferred
