  • Plan and deliver sales development programs to support business growth; develop business cases for new sales expansion or coverage improvements and negotiate with management on pursuit
  • Develop and maintain strategic relationships with key groups and large target accounts; serve as the primary business contact and manage account satisfaction
  • Identify opportunities for sales expansion, research opportunities, select markets/channels, and collaborate with cross-functional teams to assess and establish business opportunities
  • Provide leadership in business development planning, analysis of market reports, and mentoring/supervision when the manager is absent

This Consultant, Business Development (Nationwide Agribusiness) role may be performed remotely. Candidates located near our Des Moines, IA or Columbus, OH offices will work in a hybrid environment.

In this role, the individual will:

  • Manage relationships across national and network agribusiness partners by planning, executing, and expanding engagement with Nationwide Agribusiness.
  • Interact with partner firm leadership at all levels to understand business appetite, participate in annual planning, and identify growth opportunities.
  • Support the agribusiness team by developing organizational insights, sharing information with territory managers, and serving as a liaison across teams.
  • Collaborate with Nationwide national partners to identify opportunities, strengthen partnerships, and drive business development initiatives.

Preferred skills and experience:

  • Sales and/or underwriting experience with the ability to communicate appetite, guidelines, and value propositions.
  • Understanding of independent agency structures and distribution models.

You'll develop business cases for new sales expansion or coverage improvement opportunities and negotiate with and influence management on pursuit. You will serve as the primary business contact for larger target accounts and manage account satisfaction.

Job Description

Key Responsibilities:

  • Implements cross-functional and/or cross-business unit strategic sales initiatives.

  • Develops and maintains business relationships with key groups and/or individuals within the larger target market(s) for the purpose of sales expansion.

  • Responsible for all communications, conflict resolution and compliance with contractual agreements within assigned target market.

  • Researches, identifies and selects the best opportunities for sales expansion within target market(s).

  • Selects and recommends the best existing markets or channels to improve sales coverage.

  • Partners with others (Technology, Marketing, Sales, Legal, etc.) to assess, evaluate and establish business opportunities.

  • Participates as a subject matter authority in business development planning projects.

  • Analyzes, presents and interprets sophisticated market conduct and business development reports to management and/or leadership.

  • Provides supervision, mentoring and training to lower-level associates and leads team in the absence of the manager.

Performs other responsibilities as assigned. 

Reporting Relationship: Reports to the Manager/Director. This is an individual contributor role.

Typical Skills and Experiences:


Education: Undergraduate degree in business administration or related field preferred.

Experience: Minimum of eight years of sales or business development experience, preferably in the insurance or financial services industries.

Knowledge, Skills and Ability: Expert understanding of sales, marketing and business development practices. Excellent verbal and written communication skills to effectively connect with others. Proven ability to understand and analyze business information needs, analyze data requests and develop relationships. Strong customer focus, dedication to results and optimistic.

Job conditions:


Overtime Eligibility: Not Eligible (Exempt)

Working Conditions: Normal office environment. Spends the majority of time prospecting within assigned target market.

If a Sales job, Sales Incentives, based on performance goals are possible in addition to this range. Note on Compensation for Part-Time Roles: Please be aware that the salary ranges listed below reflect full-time compensation. Actual compensation may be prorated based on the number of hours worked relative to a full-time schedule.

The national salary range for Consultant, Business Development : $87,000.00-$162,000.00

The expected starting salary range for Consultant, Business Development : $87,000.00 - $131,000.00
