Ciena is the global leader in high-speed connectivity. Within the High-Speed Photonic Component (HSPC) organization, this role is central to advancing Ciena’s silicon photonics innovation and enabling next-generation optical networking solutions. As a Silicon Photonics Chip Designer, this position directly shapes the performance, scalability, and manufacturability of high-speed optical transmitters and receivers across Ciena’s product portfolio.
• Design and validate silicon photonics chips for high-speed optical transmitters and receivers, balancing performance, cost, and reliability requirements
• Define photonic integrated circuit layouts (GDS) and collaborate with wafer fabrication partners on design verification, production, and delivery
• Lead and contribute to photonic circuit design reviews prior to release to manufacturing
• Support module prototyping, test definition, and transfer of designs to high-volume production in partnership with operations and manufacturing teams
• Drive continuous improvements in performance, yield, and reliability across the full product life cycle
• Collaborate with cross-functional teams to deliver prototypes and production products based on Ciena’s silicon photonics platform
• Monitor, document, and communicate technical progress while proactively identifying risks impacting specifications, schedules, or budgets
• Master’s or Ph.D. degree in optics, physics, engineering physics, or a related discipline
• Minimum of 5+ years of industry experience in silicon photonics integrated circuit design
• Proven track record of delivering silicon photonics products into production environments
• Advanced proficiency with photonic and electronic design tools, including Cadence Virtuoso and Ansys Lumerical
• Strong knowledge of passive and active photonic integrated circuit design principles
• Ability to work independently while contributing effectively within multidisciplinary teams
• Written and verbal fluency in both English and French
• Hands-on experience with photonic integrated circuit characterization, including direct current (DC) and radio frequency (RF) testing of active and passive devices
• Knowledge of optical communications systems and high-speed optical architectures
• Experience supporting yield improvement initiatives and manufacturing ramp activities
• Familiarity with high-volume semiconductor manufacturing environments
• Exposure to reliability testing and qualification methodologies
The annual pay range for this position is $98, 100– $156, 700
Pay ranges at Ciena are designed to accommodate variations in knowledge, skills, experience, market conditions, and locations, reflecting our diverse products, industries, and lines of business. Non-Sales employees may be eligible for a discretionary incentive bonus, while Sales employees may be eligible for a sales commission.
