  • Performs copyediting and proofreading across stages, including cover production from cover copy to printers’ proofs, and reviews promotional and galley materials

Job description

 

Penguin Random House is seeking an Associate Production Editor to work with various Penguin Publishing Group imprints within the Corporate Bookmaking division. This person will report to the Senior Director, Production Editorial, and oversee all aspects of the production cycle for original titles and reprints in an impressive list of commercial fiction focusing on romance, fantasy, romantasy, book club fiction, horror, mystery, thrillers, and suspense.

The Role:  

  • Hires freelance copy editors and proofreaders and reviews their work, including clearing manuscripts post-copyediting and collating changes from authors and freelancers in page proofs. This work may include additional copyediting, fact-checking, following up with queries to the editor/author, and flagging issues for the designer.  
  • Keeps books on schedule and error-free under tight deadlines  
  • Styles manuscripts for design and typesetting  
  • Reviews all phases of text from manuscript through blues  
  • Copyedits and proofreads all stages of cover production, from cover copy to printers’ proofs  
  • Works in close conjunction with editorial, managing editorial, design, and production to create timelines and troubleshoot project-related concerns and issues  
  • Performs quality assurance checks on ebooks  
  • Reviews promotional and galley-related materials  

Requirements:  

  • Minimum of two years’ experience in a production editorial environment or equivalent editing and project management experience  
  • Excellent copyediting, proofreading, and organizational skills  
  • Knowledge of The Chicago Manual of Style  
  • Ability to prioritize multiple assignments, work well under pressure, and consistently meet tight deadlines while maintaining quality of content  
  • Must be able to work and review work electronically using the track changes function in Word and mark-up tools in Adobe Acrobat  
  • Has strong analytical skills, communicates clearly, and will be an active participant in a collaborative team 

 

This role is open to remote candidates.  

The salary for this position is $61,000. All positions are currently eligible for annual profit award or bonus, subject to company results.
