The Research Aid will support ongoing amphibian and reptile conservation projects through extensive field research. The technician will assist with population monitoring, ecological surveys, radiotelemetry tracking, and biological sampling to support conservation and management objectives. This role involves significant outdoor work, travel to field sites, and close collaboration with research staff and project partners. Most work will be carried out in Ashtabula County, Ohio.

This is a full‑time (40 hrs/week) seasonal position running April through July.

Responsibilities

Field Research & Data Collection

  • Conducts amphibian and reptile surveys using methods such as visual encounter surveys and aquatic funnel traps.
  • Travels to multiple field sites to collect biological and environmental data.
  • Captures and processes animals safely and ethically, including:
    • Marking individuals using Passive Integrated Transponder (PIT) tags and/or shell notching.
    • Collecting samples for genetic analyses and disease screening.
    • Determining sex, measuring mass and length, and assessing body condition.
  • Records all field data using Survey123, ensuring accuracy and completeness of capture location and associated metrics.

Radiotelemetry Tracking

  • Uses radiotelemetry equipment to track Spotted Turtles.
  • Monitors habitat use, movement patterns, and nesting locations in support of long‑term conservation goals.

Field Logistics & Equipment

  • Maintains field gear, traps, radiotelemetry equipment, and supplies.
  • Ensures safe handling and transportation of animals and samples.
  • Follows all established safety procedures and field protocols.

Minimum Education Required

  • High school diploma or GED.

Required Qualifications

  • 0 years of relevant experience required (entry‑level classification).
  • Ability to work under a range of environmental conditions including:
    • Cold water
    • High summer temperatures
    • Exposure to noxious plants and biting insects
  • Physical ability to:
    • Lift at least 50 lbs. from the ground
    • Carry bulky field gear up to one mile while wearing waders
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Possession of a valid driver’s license.
