Job description

SUMMARY 

The Senior Technical Auditor is a senior, field based technical role responsible for leading and executing a comprehensive   range of accreditation audits within AMPP’s QP Accreditation Program. This position serves as the principal technical auditor, ensuring consistent, defensible application of AMPP qualification procedures and the highest standards of audit quality, independence, and professional judgment.

In addition to conducting complex audits, the Senior Technical Auditor supports the development of new auditors, delivers technical and craft worker training, and represents AMPP to facility owners, engineers, architects, contractors, and inspection firms across the industry. The role requires deep coatings expertise, strong independent judgment, and the ability to operate autonomously in complex industrial environments.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES (Other duties may be assigned)

  • Lead and conduct field, shop, shipyard, and office audits of organizations such as coating contractors, blast and paint shops, and coating inspection firms.
  • Evaluate organizational compliance with AMPP qualification procedures, including but not limited to QP-1, QP-2, QP-3, QP-5, and related programs.
  • Serve as lead technical auditor on complex, high risk, or escalated audits, exercising sound professional judgment and ensuring consistent interpretation of standards.
  • Plan, organize, and coordinate accreditation audits, including development and execution of weekly audit schedules and management of multiple concurrent assignments.
  • Arrange costs effective and efficient travel to support audit assignments while meeting program timelines and budget expectations. 
  • Prepare detailed, accurate, and defensible audit reports and supporting documentation that are completed and submitted within required deadlines.
  • Coordinate and deliver craft worker training in conjunction with accreditation audits, including hands on assessments where applicable.
  • Maintain all required qualifications, certifications, and continuing education necessary to conduct assigned audits and training activities.
  • Mentor and support new or less experienced auditors through technical guidance, audit shadowing, and best practice sharing.
  • Deliver technical presentations and briefings to facility owners, architects, specifying engineers, contractors, and inspection companies regarding accreditation requirements and value.
  • Interface effectively and professionally with members, facility owners, contractors, inspectors, and their representatives at job sites and office locations.
  • Support the Program Director and QP Business Development team by providing technical expertise, customer facing support, and industry insight.
  • Remain current on applicable industry standards, specifications, and best practices related to coatings, surface preparation, inspection, and quality management systems.
  • Ability to manage competing priorities in a fast paced, field based environment while maintaining accuracy and professionalism.  
  • Represent AMPP professionally at audit sites, training sessions, industry meetings, and stakeholder engagements.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • AMPP Coating Inspector Program (CIP) Level III or AMPP Protective Coatings Specialist (PCS) certification in good standing.
  • AMPP C3 and C5 certifications required and must be obtained within the first 60 days of employment.
  • OSHA 30-hour training required and must be obtained within the first 60 days of employment.
  • OSHA 30, 500, or Director-approved alternative training required, as applicable.
  • Must meet the experience requirements of the AMPP/SSPC Competent Person/Supervisor for Industrial Structures.
  • Minimum of ten (10) years of time experience in the industrial coatings industry, preferably performing   technical quality audits, safety audit, coating and lining inspection services, or closely related work.
  • Completion of a two-day (minimum 16-hour) Principles of Auditing course or a director approved equivalent technical auditor training program.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and relevant industry-specific software applications.

SPECIALTY CERTIFICATIONS AND TRAINING

Required specialty certifications and training include, but are not limited to:

  • AMPP/SSPC Concrete Coating Inspector (CCI Level 2)
  • Metalizing Inspector Endorsement
  • QCS training
  • OCAT and SCAT training are desirable and considered a strong plus.

EDUCATION BACKGROUND

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering, materials science, construction management, or a related technical field preferred; equivalent industry experience will be considered.
  • Significant experience in industrial coatings, corrosion control, inspection, or related technical disciplines.
  • Prior experience conducting audits, inspections, or formal assessments against industry standards strongly preferred.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently in senior, field-based technical roles with minimal supervision.

CERTIFICATIONS AND TECHNICAL QUALIFICATIONS

  • AMPP/SSPC certifications, including Coating Inspector Program (CIP) Level II or III.
  • Additional AMPP, NACE, SSPC, or equivalent industry certifications are highly valued.
  • Ability to maintain, renew, and remain in good standing with all required certifications and auditor qualifications.

LANGUAGE AND COMMUNICATION SKILLS

Ability to read, analyze, and interpret professional journals, technical procedures, specifications, and governmental regulations. Ability to write clear, well-structured audit reports, business correspondence, and procedural documentation. Ability to effectively present technical information and respond to questions from managers, members, customers, and the general public in senior level technical and customer-facing settings.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as percentages, ratios, proportions, and basic statistical measures relevant to audit sampling, evaluation, and reporting.

REASONING ABILITY

Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret instructions furnished in written, verbal, diagrammatic, or schedule form.  demonstrated ability to exercise independent professional judgment and provide technical guidance or informal leadership to peers or less experienced auditors.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

No supervisory responsibilities required for this role.
